![]() West Texas | Got a call Monday morning about a front wheel locking up on an 8420 MFWD ILS. In the middle of a cotton field.
Finally had some time today to tear into it. We lifted the front end up with the 3 point on another tractor and drug it back to the shop. It appears that a bolt broke holding one of the planet gears. It chewed up the gears and busted the outer hub. Had to use the gas ax to get it all apart.
The broken bolt in the upper left corner.
The bolt ring cut easy, the rest of the hub was very difficult to cut. Ended up finishing the cut with a grinder. Finally got it spread apart enough to pry it off. And of course some of the parts are on back order! Hope they can find the missing parts at a dealer somewhere.
Tractor has 5600 hrs and this is the second time this happened!

![]() West Texas | No, about halfway down. I need to examine the broken bolt some more as it looked a little funny.

Western illinois | who builds the front axle for deere? used to be foreign made front axles on all mfwd. our first was a deutz with a ZF front axle. never had any trouble in over 8000 hrs. had a 3594 case, had to put seals in it at around 3500 hrs. i wouldn't farm without mfwd, but the parts are VERY expensive. sure wouldn't expect that kind of a problem, let alone twice. good luck.

NW Washington | I am sure JD builds their own MFWD axles now. They used ZF's for a short time, but when the MFWD thing really took off they started making their own.

![]() West Texas | This is on a tractor with the independent link suspension front axle. The first time it happened while going full speed down the road. I believe a bolt came loose or broke then too but it was fixed under warranty at the dealer. It's going to cost close to $5000 in parts alone. It took me 2-2½ hrs to get it apart. That's normally a 30 min job, getting it apart. The ZF axle's Deere used where very good. We never had much trouble with them. When they came out with their own axle that's when we started having lots of seal problems with them. On average the seals would not last 1000 hrs.

This seems to be a known problem on the 20 series ILS. I know of two in this area that have done the same thing.
