Tell me about these tractors? The good and bad and things to look out for? Seems like all the research I've done is positive with a few electrical gremlins in the earlier models. It has a blue top cab. Looking for a FWA loader tractor. I know they aren't the heaviest but price is decent and the ones I've checked out so far seem to be a comfortable nimble tractor for moving bales, etc. Couple of other questions Is the tranny a true powershift? The one I'm looking at has 3 point issues, what could it be and could it be spendy? What kind of hydraulic system is on there? Can I mid mount a valve for a loader and joystick? What's the best way to plumb? How hard or can you add extra SCVs? It only has 2 and I like 4. Also on another note, where can I find the additional hydralic lines for a Farmhand XL495 loader. What's the thoughts on this loader. Doesn't have a grapple so would need to add one.

Have an 8340 and 5640. 5640 is a sl model with a 12 speed manual shift and in my opinion is a better trans. The 8340 is a sle with power shift. It has four power shifts then push lever ahead and four more split with a high and low lever giving a total of 16 speeds foward and reverse. Foward/reverse is on the right done with a lever and cable to a synchronizer that is spendy to replace, had it fail at little over 4k hours. Not the smoothest shifting from foward to reverse even after it was replaced. Scv's can b added but at a pretty big expense, lines cables handles and outlets are pricey. Engine is very good, powerful and great starting in cold weather. Very happy overall with the tractors but neither have a loader on them. I like the ford/newhollands its our main tractor line up on our farm. With that said i would never put a loader on either of them especially for bale work where it's back n forth all day. Have tn 70a with left hand reverser and loader that is far superior. My 2 cents would be keep looking,by the time u added what u need to it, might not be to cheap when u are done. Just my opinion they are good tractors but i feel there is much better for loader work.

New Brunswick, Canada | S/SL/SLE model have all different trannies. S/SL don't often have the electronic hitch while the SLE does. SLE has load sensing pressure comp closed centre. If the front axle braking isn't disabled it tends to have worn the splines on the input to the front axle. The ones I have driven (7740SLE's, white top and blue top) all ran to high hours, like 16,000. The white top had computer issues. Both had the 4 speed power shift, a sync hi low and a non-sync high low. I think the blue top would speed match the powershift when you shifted the sync high low. The blue top had a declutch button on the shifter so no clutch, the white top didn't have the dump button. The shuttle was a right hand lever on the console. I don't think it was a power reverser like a TS, I recall clutching to use it. The ones I used all had 3 or 4 sets of remotes from new, one had a loader valve tapped in with the load sense hooked up. The other used two of the remotes. The quirk of the load sense, if the pump was destroked it takes a second to wake it up using the loader, drove me nuts. Once running the the pump was very fast so its not really precise but great for chasing bales etc. We were using forks to move top heavy equipment out of a shop when it was ticking me off with the jerking. The hitch we had to frig with a few times, I can't remember but the owner had no trouble. If there is a genuine problem it could be cheap like a position sensor or wire, or expensive like control valve. GregChuckles - 6/17/2015 19:19 Tell me about these tractors? Chilliwack, British Columbia | We have a 8800hr 8340SLE, and as far as I'm concerned its near the end of its life, at least here. For many years had electrical issues, finally discovered it was a $40 relay that was intermittent. Fixing that made it a lot nicer machine, it was once more fairly reliable. Tranny seems OK once you get used to it, and when it works, its the coldest AC on the farm! It may end up staying here for a while yet, we keep fixing the small issues, and big ones are few and far between. Im just rambling now but for a loader tractor, I would keep looking for something with a power shuttle, clutching all the time gets old. OH yeah, and ours is an early White Top, I believe ours is from 1991, the first year of production. Glenn

Leeds, North Dakota | http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/005/9/6/5963-ford-8340.htm... adding more remotes is gonna be spendy if available, front end is built pretty light, keep in mind its not a Genesis, Scott.

central ND/SD border | My dad bought a 96 8240 sle in 2007. It had over 8000 hrs on it then and we've added over 3k. Its had a loader on its entire life. We've had to replace the forward/reverse cable or holder coupler a few times, and the handle once. The forward/reverse gears are getting worn down so we have to play with the handle to get it in gear sometimes. It leaks/uses every fluid. BUT, it starts good even in winter, and no major issues despite having a hard, loader, life.
