East Central Ia | What's the ideal row width for a cover crop like cereal rye? We are considering getting something to seed covers with and would like some suggestions as we have very little expirience with newer seeder options. If we get something decent we would probably also use it for soybeans in the spring. Last fall a friend seeded some rye for me with his John Deere CCS Seeder (not sure what model) on 15" spacing. We were happy but curious if a narrower spacing would be better for covers? If we look for a nice used CCS type seeder what models and options should look for? What's a double run vs single run etc? We will want one with a tank mounted on the implement. Should we consider a newer style box drill? This will potentially seed up too 3k acs of cover and 1000-1500acs of soybeans.

NE Iowa | I bought an old 15' The drill with Coulter cart for doing covers and no-till beans. It has 8" spacing and I've had good luck with it. Personally would not go wider than 10".

I custom drill cover crops with a Great Plains 2000 w/ factory coulter cart. A drill works great especially for mixes. For that amount of acres I would recommend something 30 ft or wider though.

West Union, IOWA FLOLO Farm 52175 | I ran this rig this fall..... Tried it 2 ways, I really liked a rotary hoe in bean stubble was nice, and no washing.....but with the short growth it was behind. The way pictured is with the rolling chopper on back, I was worried Itd be to aggressive on bean stubble so I just ran it enough to get a good feel. Definitely a better qwiker stand.... The second rig is what I built this winter to drill beans, Innerseed and fall Grains...... Together, they wouldn't equal a down payment on a 1690ccs deere I'd guess....*grin* Edited by loran 5/19/2015 19:12 (image.jpg) (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (109KB - 347 downloads) image.jpg (140KB - 308 downloads)

NE Nebraska | Let me know how the second one works. I've seen some of those hiniker units sell and have always wanted to try one.

Burford | APV have become really popular around here. This unit can be mounted on anything and is very accurate in seed displacement. http://www.apv.at/ (APV 300-1.JPG) (3 point hitch unit -2.jpg) Attachments ---------------- APV 300-1.JPG (137KB - 307 downloads) 3 point hitch unit -2.jpg (177KB - 350 downloads)

East Central Ia | Pretty neat but the largest I see is 22bu... Don't think that would cut it for a lot of acres.

Russellville, KY | I realize you are operating on a far grander scale than what I am, but I have had great luck with my old White Planter. I used it last fall to no-till cereal rye on fresh harvested corn ground. Besides that, I prefer planting rather than drilling. The planter is versatile. I plant corn, change the plates to sorghum to plant sudex, then change for beans, then change plates to a wheat plate for planting my cereal rye. This fall, I aim to try planting some hairy vetch in every other row to see how that does. Give the White Planters a look if you never had before. That forced air and plate system has worked well for me.
