SE IA | What would you do if you were going to buy a tile plow and needed to either buy a dozer or Steiger tractor to pull it? My 7140 CIH probably doesn't have enough weight to pull the plow so I have to either purchase a dozer with hydraulics or a Steiger tractor. Any advice is appreciated.

East Central Ia | A tractor will be much easier to move around from farm to farm, do less damage maneuvering around in the field, and much faster surveying, pre ripping, and jockeying around in the field as well. That being said... Which would you have more use for outside of plowing tile? Do you have a lot of use for a dozer, preferably hired work for others to generate extra income? I would think an extra tractor would be much more useful. But a dozer is handy also... I just don't see having enough use for a dozer to justify unless you plan to do hired work with it. Having to haul it on a low boy everywhere would be a major drawback for me. Keep in mind the size dozer it will require as you still need the weight.

WC Indiana | Keep in mind also that older dozers can be a pain to set up for Laser or GPS grade control since they have really high flow, open center hydraulics, that don't like to be weaned down to real fine machine control.

East central Indiana | If your just doing your own work I'd buy the 4wd. We work for other people so to get more days in in the winter we went from tractor to dozer. Good thing for us we already had the dozer. (20150514_082513.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

I always wondered how an old challenger would work on the plow.

Holland, Indiana (SW IN) | have had both- now have a D85 Komatsu weighs about 32 ton pulling a Leibrich pull type plow(had the set up for about 10 yrs) - can go slow when I want to which is very nice -didn't like the speed of a big tractor in first when starting out in hard ground. We rarely have to pull it- usually just when we hit rock even then just grab the blade of the dozer with the track hoe it usually moves. A big dozer is pretty hard to tear up-I have seen tractors in pieces after being hooked to a tile plow.. Welded on extra tall ( 5'') grousers can lay any time we feel like being in the weather -We really like it. We put a stringer set up on the blade which I like - don't need an extra person stringing. And It's pretty nice to use a 32ton dozer clearing can do a lot of damage quickly. Was relatively cheap we have 20k in the dozer with a new set of rails installed Disadvantages: #1 dozer (older don't know about newer) runs 2000 psi or less our plow needed 3500+ we put on a pony motor setup $5000- but the set up works great. #2 hard to move (as said above) #3 no cab with air and heat on most older (cheaper dozers) it can get darn cold & wet out there #4 no Gps auto steer - we pre mark our laterals with an ammonia applicator - just leave on the knives for the spacing you want- which works pretty good we will stay with the dozer hope this helps -Dan

N W Ohio | I have been using a dozer now for 2 years and finally bought an older pta 325 Steiger to do the job. We have a d7f hooked with a Johnson pull type 6' plow. Worked ok but really slow driving back to the next start. Also was a pain to move being 12' wide. Not enough hyd either, we had remotes t'd into the tilt circuit and strapped the level over to run it but often had trouble with not enough pressure. Would definitely recommend a Steiger with the auto Trans, I think it goes as slow as the dozer in low gear.

Slicker than a Yes album. | Solid frame, yes. Slow enough, not really.

east central iowa | Don't know how steep or your soil type but here to go over 4 ft and the conditions aren't ideal which is most days in the fall or you get a couple inches of frost in the ground you need 3 tractors sometimes but most the time you will need two. I finally bought a gold digger and put a d8h on the front of it. Only need help pulling when it's really muddy or a very deep main. Also It's paid for itself in other projects waterways tree removal etc get a big one if you get a dozer. Check around for guys to move it for you. I have a guy move mine charged me 150 dollars to move it 10 miles to a farm I just bought. Might be slower driving back to main but I don't pre rip anything and don't need another guy pulling me when you don't have lots of help that is a huge savings

We tried a 9370 and it was too light and would spin out too much. 1st gear was too fast and tore up the clutch and transmission. Bought an 80000# Fiat dozer that works much better. Set up separate closed center hydraulics off the back end. Added a Red Dot a/c system to the roof and its pretty descent now.

SE IA | I currently have a 1953 D7 cat that is cable operated. I've seen hydraulics added to them so I could check more into that or trade if for a dozer with hydraulics or go the Steiger route. Does anyone have a website or business to call to price a hydraulic setup kit/pony motor? Folks with large 4 wheel drive tractors-how often do you think I'd have to hook up another tractor due to excessive slipage (assuming I can tile in dry enough soil)? I'll be tiling bottom ground that is soil 1715-Nodaway-Lawson-Ackmore silt loams 0-2 percent slopes.

east central iowa | Probably depends a lot on how deep your going and how big of boot or tile your installing I'd say 4 foot or shallower 4 inch tile and it's dry you wouldn't need much help if it's a large 4wd

Central IL | We have a Bron mounted plow on a challenger 865. When it's dry or even just somewhat muddy we can pull all day and never hook. But we are only using it for laterals and generally don't get over 4 foot deep. But can pull 5 if needed. Never plowed anything bigger than 4". Wheel anything bigger. Most likely bottom ground you will be doing good to maintain 3 foot depth so I would think you would get along just fine with an old steiger. I've seen guys have a rack on the front to add concrete weights when they need to go deep. Our challenger weighs right around 50k and the plow weighs another 9k but I don't think much of the plow weight helps pull because a lot of it is just sitting on the ground. Weight and low speed are the biggest key for plowing. The cat was the heaviest and slowest geared we could find. There have been millions of feet of tile pulled in with steigers with mounted double link plows. I would shop around and find one setup like that all ready to go. You will most likely be putting pipe in on .05 grade on bottom ground so a good double link plow would be your best bet. You can get an old one for same price as a new pull type and be setup good. Go to linkmfg.ca he will either have what you need or can find it.

Holland, Indiana (SW IN) | about your old D7 -if it is a powershift would probably work-best I remember they are about 140 hp a straight shift may run out of pull? You may have to add weight but adding weight to the blade is not a problem- I think your D7 probably weighs about 23 ton may be a little light We bought our hyd unit from Liebric in Ohio- at times they have used ones? phone # 419-596-3501 ( may not be a current # been a while since I called them)

Sioux Falls, SD | Go to northland trenchings website. They have a steiger with a Wayne's plow for 67500 or something like that. We have pulled up to 12" with our quad and Wayne's.
