Ogallala,NE
...you can buy a rebuild kit for it for $51.99 instead of buying a whole new compressor from mother deere for $684.

The compressor I'm talking about is JD part number AA72119. This compressor is actually built by Viair, and their model number for it is a 450C-IG. The only thing wrong with ours is it sucked dirt through the air filter and ruined the piston ring and cylinder wall. From now on the air filter will be in the cab.

Here is the kit we ordered:

Hope it saves somebody getting taken by deere someday!

Ya know you can also order a new 450c for about $185. I just got my VAIR 350c for my Kinze 3660 today via UPS. It cost about $160. Forgot to mention I ordered it on Amazon.

Either the air filter doesn't seal well, or it isnt fine enough. Not sure, but it is a common problem, at least around here.

We run the intake line in the cab with the wires.

It's was a pip that deere did. They ran new line up into the cab and had a bracket to mount it to your fold box bracket. Every planter should have been done.

Why did you go with a 350 instead 450?

Northern Illinois

On our tru count compressor we did the line into the cab with the filter in the cab but we also used 3/8 tube for less restriction.

I believe they came out after year 1 with this planter and put this on. I can see why with the dust today it would be good.

I bought this one from Hornblasters for $250 for clean sweeps. I have a line with a filter running to the cab.

That's a good idea, but you also need to consider the check valve in the leader hose, and the reed valve in the cylinder head. If the compressor has sucked dust, there will be dust contamination everywhere. Dust in the air lines gums up valves, it gums up the check valve, and dusted reed valves don't seal well either. Rebuilding is a good idea, but if you don't get everything, it doesn't help.

Another guy's idea for sourcing the complete pump from amazon doesn't sound bad either.

I would desperately love to find a source for a super heavy duty filter that could stand up to this harsh environment. When the compressor is not mounted at the front of the tongue, a long suction line to the cab is not always practical.

Kmech,

Overkill? Or just a long filter service interval?

I replaced a 350. I thought about upsizing to a 450 but the amp draw was a little higher and I didn't want the headache of blowing fuses

Go to your local case ih dealer and buy the heavy duty filter and you will stop going through compressors. And replace your one that is about to blow up with the Viair ordered online because they are over priced and probly back ordered at any equipment dealer. And for no more than what they cost online order two.

Ogallala,NE
hello all,

Thanks for all the advice and criticism. I understand what my options were, and was just trying to help out the next guy.

1) Yes, you can buy a 450C for $185. The 450C is not the same as the 450C-IG. The 450C-IG has better seals and is a higher quality unit. One of these costs $241.87 off of Amazon. Since there is nothing else wrong with my unit, for 21.5% of the cost of buying a whole new compressor, I'll put the kit in this one. Seems like $190+ out the window to me.

2) I realize if we would have bought the used planter from the local dealer for the local dealer price, they maybe would have came out and put our air filter in the cab. Maybe. However, we saved $50k buying it elsewhere. I think we can afford to put a $50 kit in the compressor because we didn't know the air filter was supposed to be in the cab. Even if we would have bought the thing in town, I'd be surprised if they would have gotten around to doing it anyway. Just trying to get anything out of them for the equipment we've bought there, it's become quite obvious their service department is marginal at best. After all, two of us put the planter over 2154 acres in 84 hours at 5.0 mph, so I feel we haven't sacrificed much reliability by not buying it in town for their premium price tag. A good winter preventative maintenance program goes a long ways.

3) I had the compressor completely apart to install the new cylinder wall and piston, so I thoroughly cleaned all pieces, removing dust and debris. Yes there was dust in the check valves. I took them apart, cleaned them up, and now they seal like new ones. A dual element air filter would be ideal. That way you could blow out the outer and still have the inner for safety. I've looked quite a bit, and haven't come up with anything on a small enough scale for a 1CFM compressor. Yes, a larger one would work, but they're expensive and kind of seem like overkill.

Thanks again to those who offered advice. I was just trying to help others who might encounter the same issue, not looking for the "you stupid idiot" comments.

As far as the dual air filter question you might want to look at the filter assembly that Deere uses on their larger diesel mowers. My x495 has a housing about the size of an old Quaker Oats container. Within the container there is an inner and outer filter. You would have to adapt the outlet of the housing down to the line size in you pictures (maybe 2" down to your line size).

Maybe worth looking at the next time you are at the friendly Deere dealer.

...you'd still be buying it at Deere's parts price. I would assume it would be as prohibitive as buying the new compressor from them in the first place...

I like that. I would not hesitate to do something like that if I had an air compressor on my planter.
