I wouldn't call those 'real' power.  Kinda a low point in American design and engineering.

What makes you say that?
Better balanced than almost every machine and brought high horsepower to row crop work. Sure if you treated them like a 4 wheel drive and turned them up or weighted them down or put duals on the front there were issues, but you weren't supposed to do that anyhow. It was a pretty revolutionary design. They even built a magnum prototype with the concept.

Here they were sold into the rice fields where only a true 4wd should have been, lots of final drive issues.

Let's see.

Have a hood latch fail and run over the hood.

Don't get me going on the tranny.

They needed a few more hyd pumps on the things that could fail.

Their claim the fame was from having an appearance in the movie Airport. And I'm sure somebody will post a link to it.

The tractor didn't drive itself into the rice fields, the owners bought them for it. If only a true 4wd should have been there that's what they should have bought.

+1 twraska

Anyone who sticks up for the 30/60 2+2 does not understand how the power gets to the front wheels. They were a great prototype/concept tractor that should have never left the test farm.

72/7488s are a different story, production should have been in tandem with the release of the 50 series in 81-82. They were correctly designed and would have been an awesome true row crop 4wd.

Just wait a few more years, MFD hp limts are being reached and higher HP models will be forced back into this design.

But thanks for posting the photos trekkertrekkerNL, they are still cool looking.

If your hoods that important and you're that worried about it, take it off. Or maybe tie it someplace so it don't vacate the tractor if it fails.

Same as 1566/86 nothing new there.

We had excellent luck with a 3788 and 3588 for several years........

but we did not ask them to do 4wd heavy work.

The heaviest was we had the 3788 on an 8bottom plow.........and it handled it just fine.

We dualled the front axles on both........and they floated over wet spots.

Sometimes they jumped a little when the back tires met the front tires when operator turned a little too sharply.........but that was just an operator problem.

I don't recall exactly since it was a long time ago, but we pulled the parts and assembly drawings and compare the rear ends of 3788 to 1586 to 1086.  As I recall, the 3788 was essentially the 1086 rear end...........and that resulted in us being a little easier on the units.

Power to the old anteaters!  An interesting concept for sure but I think I only remember one in my area and he didn't have good luck with it.

Sunburst Montana

That design was nothing new and was being built overseas before IH "invented" it.  Only thing IH did was scale it up.  Google up Holder tractors.

It was the farce comedy "Airplane!" (not the same movie as Airport). The "anteater" tractor was part of a string of vehicles , starting with the fire trucks, responding to an emergency landing, however the vehicles kept getting more and more ridiculous as they streamed past. Note that the tractor was just preceded by a concrete truck.

They gallop down the road because the front end was geared different than the back end.

I had a New 3588 in 1980. I was glad to see it leave the farm. The worst IH tractor ever made in my opinion

Yeah not sure how the crop even gets in the ground. Maybe if the windshield had a 10 wide stripe to look around it would be so much better.

Hello, nice photo. I have a IH-3788 that we farm with. If they are not abused (like a large 4-WD) than they are a good tractor.
