Stoddard Co. SEMO | From the late 70's to late 80's, which of these engines is better in a tractor or truck? |
|
|
|
Sunburst Montana | Have had both over the years in trucks and tractors and still have a three 3406s and one 855. 3406 wins hands down. Better torque, better lugging, smoother running and starts better. Only thing the 855 has is cheaper to work on. Not saying the 855 is a bad engine. Cat is just better.

Northern CA | I think the 3406B is a pretty tough engine to beat. |

Sunburst Montana | That's my favorite engine on our farm. Have one in a 1989 KW T600. Wish I could clone that engine and put it in everything we have including our newer tractors and semis. |

Savannah Tennessee | 3406 no doubt! |

Central Wisconsin | In 80's I ran trucks with 3406b and 855 BC4 set at 350 hp The cats would out pull the cummis and were nicer to drive. The Cummins would get better fuel mileage |

| We have three 855's all are the 400 BC. Love them to death. One I'm running right now for my water truck its a 88 IH 9300 straight piped with a Eaton fuller 9sp. Has a 3250 gallon water tank on it Love never out of power in the hills. Easy truck to run. That being said I've never ran a 3406 but I'm happy with my old 855s

| X2 on cheaper and less fuel consumption on the Cummings. Put a lot of miles on several. Around several more. No one ever walked home. A Cummings will run and get gradually worse. Cats tend to have catastrophic failures. Broken cranks and thrown rods.
I saw a guy pull a load with no water in Cummings.. He made it 30 miles before it quit. He added water right away and drove it the rest of the day. The block actually turned blue it was so hot! |

Sunburst Montana | Both kind of failures can happen to either engine. Our 350 cummins in our 1982 KW blew up on us taking a load of grain to town. Meanwhile our 3406 in our Freightliner starting using oil one year slowly at first but after a couple of years it was up to a gallon a day before it got overhauled. |
