Boone Co. Iowa | Hi, Bought a farm on Friday, first farm I've ever bought. Has 65 acres currently tillable, 55 acres in CRP, and 40 acres of pasture. I was thinking about building a few places to cross the creek that goes right through the middle of the pasture. (think of 4 40s, in the shape of a backwards capital L). There would be a fair number of spots that are probably 30 ft. across, and I was reading online that some folks have made them with telephone poles. There is currently a big telephone / electricity project going on, and I would GUESS that they will have some old poles that they want to get rid of.... Mainly thinking of gator and jeep wrangler crossings....anyone built a bridge w/ telephone poles before???

The concern with old used poles - the structural integrity is likely all used up, that's why they are being replaced. Also, you build it with intentions of only a ATV or UTV using it and pretty soon, someone with heavier equipment/vehicles are using it (Think Emergency Responders). If you do build using used wood - post the warning signs, for others that may not know what you did.

Mankato MN; Casa Grande AZ | I wouldn't build anything without checking the rules at the county first.

southern MN | Pick one spot and build a good, sturdy crossing. Not worn out old telephone poles. After getting the county/NRCS permit. Paul

south west iowa | How big is the creek? How much water goes down it in a big rain? We put in some big tubes if put in right will last a long time. Spend the money to do it right the first time and make it bigger than you think you need.

NS Canada | How deep is it? Fast flow? I'd just make a shallow crossing with rock if its not too bad and isn't gonna wash away every year

northern IL | Don't waste ur time with poles . If you want a bridge take an old semi flatbed and put concrete blocks under the edges and drape it across . Truck load of 2" rock on each side to get to the trailer with your your jeep. Concrete blocks will get you 2' above the creek and it will be over 45' + wide oved a 30' creek . You could do it cheaper now with scrap iron down $100 per ton.

WY, OK | We had several built with power poles for the bottom stringers, used RR bridge planks over the top. They work fine until they don't. After had one fail about 10 years ago every bridge is replaced with culverts now.

Line those with out hog slats and that works well.

Mankato MN; Casa Grande AZ | Our township has an old cartway with 2 upside down cars with their doors taken off, in the bottom of a ravine for a culvert! Rules? We don't need no sinkin' rules!

NC Indiana | Could you just slope the banks and put a stone base in and have a ford?

Central IL | Like has been said above, Missouri crossing usually work well. I put a bunch in for a guy on a pasture through a creek that was probly 50-60 ft from top of bank to top of bank. Guy is real happy with how they work. They were funded by NRCS. Main thing is dig down all the way to solid clay. The creek I was working in had about 2' of nasty mud and then good solid clay. Put in RR3 to 6" below water flow grade. Then filled up with CA6 to 2" below water flow. Key is to keep it just below the flow so it doesn't wash out. The creek these were put in really gets to raging at times and they have help up great. Been a few years since I did them but if I remember right they were around $3500 per crossing for supplies and labor. Took about 2 days each. (One guy with excavator)

Wright County, MN | My cousin used an old semi trailer that was completely shot, but has a good floor. Not sure how he put it in place though.

SW So Dakota | I saw a bridge built out of 2 irrigation spans set side by side with some sort of decking over the top, like angle iron and expanded metal on top of that with side rails.
