s.e. Pa | I am looking for a small soil saver to work some ground. I have a 100 hp 2 wheel drive tractor, and a 135 hp mfwd tractor. I thought it would be nice to have one that the smaller tractor could pull if need be, and the bigger tractor would handle it easily. I am thinking 5 shank? I thought the bigger tractor might pull 7, but probably not easily. What do you guys think? How about landoll vs glencoe? There is one of each locally for sale. A 5 shank plow is only 6' 3" wide. Both my tractors are near 8' wide. Will this be a problem? Thanks, Josh

Ludington/Manistee MI area | Pulled a 7 for several years with 105 hp two wheel drive got by fine. Even pulled it with little smaller tractor on limited outings.

Illinois | Have a neighbor that pulls a 7 with a jd 4430. He says it pulls it very easy. Before he had the 4430 he used a 4020. It probably wouldn't cost much more to get one as wide as your tractor.

Mifflintown, PA | How do soil savers compare to chisel plows? I wouldn't think the straight gang would take too much power. Have experience with 3pt mounted 7 and 9 shank chisel plows, both with twisted shovels. Hilly ground from rocky loam to modest clay. 7 shank behind 80hp IH 786. Pulled okay. 6 weights up front. 7 and 9 on a 100 hp MFWD Case 2094, 7 was a toy, 9 was a good fit. 9 on a 160 hp Case 2390. Nearly a toy pulling, but the front was light, didnt have weights to put on it then.

Here a 100 horse 2wd pulls a 7 shank Glencoe easily, a 135 would pull 9, without the mfd. Don't know if it's still posted, but there was a disc chisel in classifieds for $2k Edited by XIX 2/25/2015 21:04

Republic OH (NC OH) | i pulled a 5 shank brillion soil saver with a 966 with a turbo at 125 hp. we could never pull it as deep as it could go. it all depends on how deep you want to go. we set the out side shovels to throw the dirt in since you have to drive so close to your last past. i also have an s-tine leveler on the back. fwiw

southern MN | I've got tough soils, typically use one less plow bottom that others do... I run 140hp 2wd tractor with a 7 shank Glencoe. It pulled it well through some very dry very hard clay the last couple years. Worked out nicely. It was suggested maybe I could pull a 9 shank, but I'm happy with the 7 in my soil. With wide spaced duals the tractor is wider than the 7 shanks, but it throws dirt a little extra so works fine. Paul

North Central, NC | Pulled a 7 shank Athens (rhino) with 115hp New Holland mfwd. It depends on the points you are looking to run also. I've been running straight chisel points to have fewer clods and they actually shatter better a don't pull as hard. Good luck!!

Mid Michigan | I think either tractor will pull a 9 shank as long as you don't set them in the ground too deep and the conditions are not too wet and slippery. The 135 hp would be ok with it in almost any conditions but the 100 hp would probably spin out if you sank it in the ground 12 inches. Valparaiso, Indiana | My dad bought a 7 shank chisel 20 years ago so he could also use it on the smaller tractor. In 20 years it has been on the smaller tractor maybe once to move it around the barn yard. The 7 shank doesn't even cover the dual wheel tracks. Takes forever to get a field done. Get as big as you can pull and take off a couple shanks if you have to use a smaller tractor in a emergency.

Northern Illinois | I don't know if anyone from a different geography can weigh in. We used to pull a 7 shank landoll with 4440 in tight ground that was a job. Then we pulled 11 shank glen one with 4955 that was still a chore in clay ground. Pull 5 shank 24 earthmaster now at 12-13 inches and same 4955 handles it nicely. I will guarantee if you put a 4320 on an 11 shank here and buried it your 4320 would be snuffed out. I think if you get a 7 shank and keep it on the 135 hp fwa tractor you'll be fine and pull it the speed and depth you want. If you put it on a 100 hp 2wd you may not pull it the way you like. At least here.

west central ohio | We have the landoll 9 shank soilsaver with the twisted shovels. We have pulled it for twenty years with a case 2670 with fluid in the tires and the fuel pump turned up a fuzz. That set up has stood the test of time, we run the unit at about 4.5 mph and about 7 inches deep in tight clay. Any deeper or faster and the plow starts to jump and buck, due to not enough weight. The one thing I would say that applies directly to what you are trying to do, is that with a twisted shovel the blow-out of clods from those shovels keep the tractor riding right on top of those clods on your next pass. We don't run duals either. So just guessing that if we are having that with a 9 shank then smaller will have the same prob or worse. I would try to go as wide as you can, just so you are not hugging the last pass with your tires. Ps a 2670 is about 235 hp stock.
