Was just seeing if anybody has any experience with these tractors? I know it came with the 903 Cummings, but the previous owner has put an 855 in it. Just interested in seeing what the deal was with them, plus I can pick it up for pretty cheap. Thanks!

Basically just a PT Steiger painted blue. Good, usually undervalued tractor.

Thanks for the reply, yea from what info I could find they where built by Steiger for ford. I can get the tractor for 8k an it's only 40 miles away. Figured for that price is something major did happen to it I could dang near scrap it an get half my money back lol.

just a Steiger in blue, parts just like Steiger, probably won't win any beauty contests but will pull just fine. Old Steigers not much on paint, ac, or brakes, but with a little upkeep are fine. Don't worry guys in central Illinois or Iowa don't want them, your gain, usually cheap enough to have several

Yeah I didn't even know the guy had it, went to look at 2 Deere 8630's he had. Seen it sitting how back so I had to ask about it, said he used it once to pull a 30 foot ammco tandem disc an said that tractor never even new it was behind it.

Don't know anything about that tractor but you really need to check field speeds. A 903 rated rpm was 2400 IIRC, 855 might be 2100 at the high end(1900-2000 might be better) . Does not sound like a lot I know. If you can't do anything else try to get a load behind it that makes it work and see if speeds seems reasonable to you as to which which are too fast and too slow( I know easier said that done). Check road gear also, it will be slower but Steigers had a fast road gear. Other than that it is a good thing.

Yes, a lot of their can be picked up at any good truck dealership. What you cant get at a truck place, try Big Tractor Parts or as a last resort, any decent Case IH dealership.

Spent many summer hours on this tractor's little brother, an FW-30. I can tell you that the AC is terrible - plan on either completely rebuilding the AC system or driving with the doors open, as the windows do not open. Greasing the U-joints isn't too bad, except for the front ones underneath the cab. You'll have to put the Hi-Lo in neutral in order to spin the u-joints to get a grease gun on the zerks. And you'll definitely want to grease them, because replacing the u-joints - while not hard - is kind of a pain.
Seems like we had starter/battery trouble on ours fairly frequently, but could be an isolated case.
Good old tractor. Kind of wish we still had it. It was a nice looking machine and as a kid, I felt like I was the king of the world on that thing!!

As the previous poster mentioned, many parts will be available as they are generic truck or industrial parts. However, some parts will be very difficult to get, or priced so high that you will not want them. I owned a 855 powered FW20 and it went down the road eight years ago, and even then I was occasionally needing to find parts at the wreckers.

Had one in Africa for many years, preferred her to many others if not just for her ROAR. Pretty dependable over 10,000 hrs. Had heater hoses for the cab crack up and overheated the motor once badly.

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like they weren't a bad tractor. Sounds like parts might be the trickiest thing to come by for them.
