Subject: McCormick MTX tractors?

Can someone fill me in on these tractors or have experiences with them?

I'm looking for an everyday loader tractor to feed as well as assist putting hay up, a model in that 110-140 range. Main reason I want FWA, all I have is 2wd tractors and spring is no fun.

A JD guy myself I've been looking for a 50-55 series or a 10 series to no avail, still want lots if money with high hours and they are going like hot cakes with cattle prices good.

So ran across a local dealer promoting McCormicks and a zero percent finance plan, did my research and am intrigued by them as they got the 6.7 cummins in them, and appear to be simple and resale the old MX Case IHs which had a good reputation for reliability. Wouldn't mind buying one of those except good well taken care reasonable houred ones are not to be found.

So wondering overall about these and any first hand experiences? Don't wanna spend a lot on a POS. Do I expect it to be a Deere, no, but then again Deere isn't the Deere of old either and I can save myself a lot of dough. Plus I absolutely love Cummins engines, but I realize that is just one component, albeit a big one. But if the rest is undesirable unreliable crap it's not worth it either.

We don't have one, but a neighbor has an MTX 135 I believe. He uses it every day fall-spring to spread manure and then in summer to cut hay. He has gotten along pretty good with it. We used it once to spread a load of liquids and from our viewpoint, it was a nice tractor. It wasn't a Deere by any means, but if he hasn't traded it off yet, it means that he gets along fine with it. One of the biggest advantages I would see over an MX Case would be a quicker road speed. Like I said, he doesn't have a loader for it, so I am not sure how everything would hold up then. We were thinking about getting one and I had a friend tell me there were clutch issues with them but never figured out if that was true or not.

You can either buy an MFWD tractor or save some money, go with a 2wd, and do a garvo fix by pouring some concrete :)

A friend of mine has had a 135 for 10 +/- years now. Uses it for most every thing from tillage to haying. I have drove it before and thought it was very well put together with a power quad type transmission and MFWD. About the only complaint I had with it is the turning radius is about 30 acres. I thought it should turn a little shorter than it does for the size that it is.

None of the McCormick models have ever used a 6.7 cummins, they use a 6.7 NEF engine (joint venture for both iveco and cummins). A couple of models used the 5.9 QSB engine with a electric vp pump.
MTX are a strong built machine with a proven transmission. Easy to maintain on your own.

+1, lol, but do we really want the saga to end? Cattle should be heading up, another 20 bucks on those 8 weights and the deere will be reality.

Have a MTX 120 MFWD. Out of feeding cattle now, but used it to feed and haul manure. Use it now on a 12 row Kinze planter and use it for spraying in the summer. It's been a very solid tractor. No mechanical issues. Never have had a loader on it so I am no help there. During real cold weather I would put a piece of card board along the left side of the engine to help hold in the heat by the fuel filters(have a snow blower for the winter and it works well for that).

Chuckles, is there really any value in spending this much time and effort in your decision process to buy a used tractor? You just never know with used stuff what could happen. A nice low houred machine is generally a better bet, but will cost a lot more and the reality is it can still have problems. I have had it go the other way too, where I bought high hours for less money and had very good results. So, determine your needs and go BUY something. Buying a tractor doesn't have to be permanent, if you later on decide its not the right one, trade it off.

That being said, I can contribute to your question about the MTX. I have both JD and McCormicks in the size you are looking at, and all were bought used, and all have been here for 5-6 years and used for loader, raking, round baling, bale shreader, 30' drill, etc. All have accumulated 3-4000 hours in their time here and have been excellent. No major repairs among them. The 7410 needed a new pto, not a big deal. It seemed a little weak on cooling when on the baler, compared to the MTX120. We like the cab, and the road speed a lot better on the red ones. They both start very good at very cold temps. Even a little below zero not a problem without being plugged in, in a pinch. Front rims cracked on the MTX, annoying but not a deal breaker, have had deeres do that too.

Go buy something!

Thanks for your honest assessment.

But you're right it's a process, and without knowing me, you really won't understand. I like to search, research, and make the best decesion as possible. Always doesn't work out, but I'm not into rash decisions and I do the same whether I'm buying a tractor, cows, or a pickup.

My last pickup I brought was new, but it took me nearly 3 years of looking, searching, researching, and wheeling and dealing before pulling the trigger. And that's a new piece!

My problem with finding this tractor is I just can't seem to wrap my head around high houred tractors bringing what they're bringing. You're right a low houred machine may be a lemon or problematic as well, there's risk no matter what one does. I need and want a reliable machine, but I don't wanna spend that much either as I can't keep it inside when not in use...spending that much and watching it deteriorate in the sun and hail is going to kill me.

I guess I've seen too much used machinery that is supposed to be ready to go and well taken care of with a high price tag that has a high price tag and still needs a lot of work, and May or may not be problematic.

Just researching all my options. These McCormick machines look nice and simple, and are thousands of dollars less than a Deere or Case, even some used and they got a good finance plan and warranty.

Another model tractor you might look into is the Kubota. I know several guys here that have switched over to that brand for a loader/haying/feeding tractor. I don't know much about them personally, but they sure haven't been complaining about them either. Comment I always here is they got a nearly new tractor for other brands used tractor price.

I would price a new 6140D or 6115D Deere as well

I am drooling over the prices I see on those...... they seem like a good tractor, without the bells and whistles of the fancier Deere's.

I thought they had a special finance deal.

Great tractors, son has a 126gx and both of us love it. I like the transmission in the kubota better than a power quad

Usually have zero percent interest on them with great warranties

I owned a littler model a CX105.  I loved the tractor and would buy another one is a heart beat.  That being said there is getting to be lots of Kubotas around here for chore tractors.  If you look at Ag Source magazine online the central valley of California is going orange too.

I had 2 JD salesman that I trust that told me to staw away from the D series tractors, and no they weren't trying to upscale me to an M or R series as they know price wise they are off limits and they aren't gonna convince me otherwise. But basically they flat out told me that the workmanship and quality of those tractors aren't very good and they've had troubles with them.

One of them told me, look we're glad John Deere finally offers a no frills tractor ala a 4020 or 4440 without all the little accessories but updated with FWA and so forth, but the workmanship and parts put into these tractors just isn't worth pursuing. Told me to keep looking for a 10 series or 50-55 series.

They had them on the lot, told me look we'd love to
Sell you one but I don't think you're gonna be happy with one. I think that speaks volumes.

We looked at the D series and liked the tractor but not the shifting. Ended up with a Challenger for much less than a comparable Deere. ( the rest of ours are Deere tractors.) If you like the McCormick and have support go for it.

If you want to research more, like I so, looks into the M125X Kunota. We went into one of those after a Case IH 5240 Maxxum and couldn't be happier.

It's good to know I'm not the only one that doesn't like to jump into spending tens of thousands of dollars without shopping around and doing some research.
The best deals are had when you're not in a hurry and are prepared to keep what you have if you don't find what you want for the price you want.   I'm also shocked at what some think high hr used equipment is worth.

FWIW, my uncle has had an MC 105 (I think)  for 5-6 yrs now.   Far as I know he has had very little problem with the tractor.   From the limited time I've spent in it, it seems like a very handy loader tractor with good hyd's, the turn radius is good and the transmission is nice for loader work.    When he bought it I know he commented that he was getting a new tractor for less than what a comparable sized used Deere would cost.

I am glad to hear that we are not the only ones who are hesitant to spend money. You are basically the same as us, so you will probably end up with a JD. We started looking at JD, then at Case, then McCormick and some New Holland, and finally bought a Deere that hopefully will last us a while without problems. You are right, it is just a process. Started out looking at a 100 horse to replace our IH but ended up with a 175 horse for our big tractor to "replace" our 4440. So good luck with your search.

In reply to a JD D series, we were priced a new 6105D, 2wd, no loader, and I don't think that one had emissions for something like $56,000. But like you, I wasn't crazy about it.

You know what's sad though...if John Deere came out with a 4020 or 4440 built exactly the same way....not the cheap counterparts today with low quality components and parts...I'm talking metal hoods, no electronic, actual levers, soundguard cabs or the old 4020 cabs with 8 speed power shift and FWA...I would spend a lot of money on a new one of them...no questions asked sign me up. Why you say? You know you'd be getting a quality product that will get the job done for many years and be able to not put up with electronic gremlins and wiring harnesses etc that fail due to elements. Nothing more frustrating than sitting idle because a sensor is out in the seat or door or some stupid crap because no one had common sense anymore.

It's too bad whether it's Deere or Case or whomever the the quality of components and workmanship has gone down so much along with the inflated prices for these pieces of machinery is frustrated.

I agree. We just bought an 8100 so I hope it is a good tractor and lasts us along time. Our 4440 has 9000 hours and the engine or transmission has never been touched. The only major problem we have had with it was the pto and that was a fluke. If you would put a cab the size of an 8000 series and put an 8000 series MFWD on a 4440 but still have no electronics, I think you would have a pretty good tractor. If you would make a 4020 new, a 466 would be a nice upgrade from a 404 for easier starting in cold weather. Two of the simplest tractors John Deere made IMO. Can't wait to get our new to us 8100 home to see if it proves to be as reliable as our 4440 and 4020.
