Sarnia, Ontario | Have a 2005 John Deere 693 corn head that I need to know when to replace the gathering chains?
I removed 1 chain & laid on the work bench to stretch it out.
Seemed to have a bit of play in the links.
According to the owners manual it was tensioned correctly.
How much stretch is too much. Have been told that as long as I could still tension the chain with the proper clearances that it is still OK to use.
What is the best thing to do? |

central, Il. | You might consider looking at your sprockets also. I too, run them until there is no more room to tighten. If I remember correctly, our service manager at our local dealership told me years ago, you can get by with just chains the first time. The next time you will need to replace both the chains and sprockets. Easy way to tell if the sprockets need replacing is to compare a used one to a new one and if the used one looks like it is "hooking", it's time to replace them. |

Drive sprockets still look good.
I will compare a new idler sprocket to my old one.

Eastern Iowa | The drive sprockets can be switched to other side of row to wear from opposite side of the drive tooth |

SE MN Still in Pothole Country | If you are going to the trouble of taking them off I would replace. Half the ones we did came off with a tap and the other half took a BF puller. |

Arva, Ontario | Keep at it until the tensioner runs out of stroke OR, the first chain breaks, then replace them all. First replacement of chains - swap drive sprockets side to side, replace idlers with new ones with grease fittings if not factory equipped. Second replacement - replace chains, drive sprockets and idler sprockets. About that time, deck plates and snapping rolls will likely be in need of attention. That's our experience anyhow... Ken |
