Subject: 18.4x 34 tire question

Thinking about new tires for an older 4wd that has 18.4x34 tires, do I have any options of going to a taller tire without changing rims? Would like to go to some bigger rubber without spending ton of money on new rims

You might gain a little with a 20.8 X 34.

There are charts that show the rolling radius for various tires on-line.

Also the narrower rim (16"vs 18"??) for the 18.4 would pinch the 20.8 up some.

And, there might be a difference in the height from one brand to another. I know that years ago a Firestone 30.5 was shorter than BF Goodrich.

You could change to a 20.8x34 tire if your rims aren't too narrow. That would only give you 3 or 4 inches more tire height though (diameter). 18.4x34 is a much more common size....at least around here. I think some of the crab steer Case tractors used 20.8x34's and not much else did. I think you're better off staying with what you have. What tractor are we talking about? You might be able to upgrade to 18.4x38 for less money than you're thinking.

Just price a 20.8 34 and you will probably convince yourself not to go that route. Rims and step up 18.4 38s would probably be close to the same price.

you maybe able to find a decent used set of 23.1 r34 on rims and be able to use the centers. will be cheaper than new rubber.

Try metric and different brands of tires. Some are taller and wider.

It you want radials on the tractor, stay with the 18.4r34s, or go to 18.4r38s. Bias ply 20.8r34 tires go for about the same money as 18.4r38 radials. We wanted more ground pressure for our tractor, because we use it to pack silage so we went to the taller, narrower tires. Turns out we had some bad rims anyways, so it was a good deal we swapped everything.

Here are the prices from when we did it this past spring;
Bias 20.8r34 -$1,250 per tire
Radial 20.8r34-$1600 per tire
4 step up rims, 4 dual rims, and 8 18.4r38 radial tires, came out to $1,575 per tire and wheel. And they gave us $200 to take away all the old rims and tires.
