Western Cape, South Africa | What are these tractors like? Are they a Steiger tractor with IH engine? How would they compare against a John Deere 8440?

rochester IN | I spent many hours in one as a teenager. Only in the shop one time that I ever remember for clutch work. As far as the 8440, we want to a 8640 after that and the cab is far better on the deere dependability isn't even close on the deer, horsepower I would say the 8440 to be close to the same ,the pto would be nice on the deere. Have to remember though these are not huge tractors. Some will even say under powered for there weight. And they are a IH engine and rear ends with a truck type 10 speed transmission. Had a neighbor that used to tell us he would goto bed to the sound and wake up to the sound of that tractor it had a strait pipe on it at the time I thought that wAs all right now I would opt for a muffler. |

Ravenna Ohio | 3 versions built. 4366. DT466, 10 speeds, IH finals. AC 440 555NA Cummins, 10 speed, truck finals planetaries. Steiger BearCat?, 3208 Cat, 10 speeds, Truck axle planetaries. Think all have same hydraulics. My opinion. Those V8s, not great. IH axles??? Had the AC 440. Motor didn,t like me. NA motors are noisy period. Had a 4586 with 855 Cummins. The IH axles held, But had nasty chatter under faster turns. AC was ok. The hinges in that chassis can be changed in home shop with a bunch of blocks and a second tractor. Was pretty easy. Made a huge difference in the ride. Pulled 6 shank Blu-Jet with them. 215hp was not fast. But it handled it. The 855 just idled with it. Tended to use just 1 or 2 work gears. Could be some wear. Mine started popping out of gear. Get it fixed off season at first sign. We popped cab off to pull. Of course at that point we said, good time to paint it. They served us pretty well for the time. |

Northern Nebraska | They had nothing for brakes! The 466 had a turbo but not intercooled. Dads was a gutless wonder. Replaced with 7120 mfwd would pull the disk the same speed. The cab was very tinny. If you can find a stieger buy a stieger! I dont know about Africa but in the U.S. bearcat II's are less than $10,000. |

Hillsdale Michigan | had one , worked well for the most part, then the front pinion shaft went out, we couldn't keep bearings or seals in it after that |

|
montana hiline | Run one for ten years bought it cheap and was one of my better buys. The crop that it planted didn't seem to care if the tractor was fancy or not. Buy it for what the payment would be for a year on a newer machine and run it till it dies, might take years. |

northern MN | Same rear end as a 1066, I wouldn't touch it with someone elses money. I used to sell em and ran one for a year. |

Southeast North Dakota | My dad had one that he bought in about 1980, it was a 1976 model red-cab. It served us very well because we treated it exactly like what it was----a small 4wd. We pulled a 29' field cultivator, 17' chisel plow, and a 26' disk and it lasted and served us well. A lot of people that bought them thought they had a 300 HP 4wd and pulled the daylights out of the poor things and had terrible luck. They were good tractors, if the owner used his head and pulled them accordingly. |

Grandview Mo. | I thought sure someone would ask about the beast the IH is sitting next to.......so I will; any pictures??? |

Galahad, Alberta | Its an ACO 4wd. South African built, family run business. Built the first one on the farm, grew the business from there. sizes from 285 up to 820 hp using Mercedes Benz ADE for power, with a few Cummins in special order models. The one in the pic looks to be a very early model, maybe 1986.

Hillsdale Michigan | forgot to add, the 66 series didn't have lube oil to the pinion shafts, the 86 series doses |

Galahad, Alberta | I have a book written by Peter Simpson about most of the large 4wd tractors ever built. Lots of info and good photos of many machines. Sorry, not interested in an ACO right now!

| One of the major farm magazines in the US had a pic of an ACO or is it ACCO back in the 70's or 80's. I think they were looking for possible sales in North America. |
