cropsey, il 61731 | So what do I do? just kidding It was running pretty poorly (Joy air compressor) so I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor and wires and put a kit in the carb (gaskets, float valve and fuel screw). I do have spark, but it's not super bright. I'm pretty sure I have the wire on correctly. I tried to find TDC of the #1 cylinder (assuming front is fan side) thru the spark plug hole and could only feel what I think is the #1 exhaust valve going up (valve is in line with exhaust manifold port). I looked at the rotor when the valve opened and assumed this would be some time after TDC so where the rotor just was would be #1. Make sense? I've tried ether with not even some popping. Parts were all from NAPA since they seemed to have standard kits for these motors. It doesn't crank particularly fast, but it started prior to my 'repair'. Thanks

Is it set up with a mag or a distributer? If it has a dist, take the wire going into the dist from the coil and unhook it. Take a jumper lead from the + post on the battery and clip it to the wire going into the dist. Try starting it. If it's starts and runs correctly you have something bad from the coil back to the switch. I would also check the backlash in the dist just to make sure you don't have a bad bearing. Also... those engines can be bad about sticking a valve if they sit alot, pull the side cover off and check to see if that could be a problem as well. Just a few off the top of my head thoughts.

Leeds, North Dakota | Pat, you have wires crossed, if you didn't fool with distributor, Scott.

North Central Indiana | I would say that you have either got your wires crossed accidentally or its not getting fuel for some reason after the carb rebuild. The way I usually check to see if the plug wires are on correctly is to take spark plug number 1 out and place a plastic or rubber plug in it. Use a hand crank or wrench on the crank pulley and turn it over til the plug blows out. That means #1 is coming up on compression, so go ahead and slowly keep turning the engine over until the #1 piston reaches the top then you have hit TDC. Make sure that plug wire is going to number 1 on the distributor and then go ahead and follow the 1-3-4-2 firing order. Do you have an electronic ignition or points?

cropsey, il 61731 | this is a distributor with points. I have spark, but not great. I will try to bypass the key switch and hook the coil/dist lead to positive and see if it works. With this engine it doesn't seem like I can feel the piston coming up since the spark plug appears to be right over the exhaust valve. I could tell when the exhaust valve comes up indicating the piston is on the exhaust stroke. I think I'll try the cork idea since that would get me much closer to tdc. thanks
