I'm looking at a '08 435 Versatile. How can you tell whether it has the Cat powershift or the one they had before the Cat???

Are either powershifts very reliable or should I stick with the old 12 speed manual trans?

can a 435 pull a nine shank ripper on 24" centers in heavy ground?

One way to tell
Twin Disc is a 12 speed
Cat is a 16 speed

Cat at that HP rating may outlive the rest of the tractor.

And have better resale.

My thought is a 9-shank is borderline depending on soil.

16 speed Cat TA22 transmission has the control solenoids across the top of the front of the transmission. It is considerably larger than the other two options.

12 speed manual transmission would need to have the shaft updates done for me to even consider purchasing the tractor.

12 speed twin disc is a holdover from the earlier series of tractors. As Versatile and Twin Disc do not seem to be doing business anymore I would avoid it.

As Caterpillar is using the TA22 transmission in some of their own equipment I hope it will be reliable, as I have a 435 with that transmission.

http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/007/6/8/7681-versatile-435... very easy to see difference in pic, one heck of a tranny, externally Versatile dealer can work on, after Versatile asks Cat for okay, internally. NO, Cat only, programming tranny, need Cat software and whatever I don't know, only had one customer that had one said it was jumpy when clutch was depressed and then engaged, looked in service manual no calibration procedure. Called Versatile and asked about issue, service support whick is excellent asked if customer was using clutch, asked WHAT, don't us clutch, went up to tractor, customer pulling a 60 ft chisel plow, watched him use clutch, was very rough engagement, made a turn on end of field, told customer don't use clutch, he looked at me, said this is what Versatile told me smooth engagement, got questions give me a shout, you will really like tranny, Scott.

Pick gear, revs and push the lever into gear!

The only time I use the left pedal is backing and hooking up an implement

Hey jec. I think you should be fine with the 9 shank on 24's. I am using 11 shank Krause Dom on 15's with 535. I still have the 12 speed Syncro trans. Couldn't pull it with any smaller of tractor with old trans. You I think will be better off with the cat power shift even with a smaller tractor. You will be better able to get the fastest ground speed and get the best fuel economy. I believe that tractor can be set to shift into the next gear to allow for max productivity. Cat transmission was tested and abused to the max in big versatile high hp tractors and as far as I know they haven't been able to break not a single one of them so far. I wish I had one in my 535. Would be a huge help in hard compacted fall tillage situations. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input...sounds like I want the Cat trans, unfortunately the one I am looking at (and seems like a good deal) is a 12 speed power shift and according to NAT, I should stay away.

It seems pretty hard to find those cat trannys, but may be worth the search

Thanks to all,
Happy Thanksgiving!

The 2008 large frame 435, 485, 535 & 575 Versies were some of the first with Cat transmissions. And as one goes into newer model years, they get easier to find and on new ones it's tough to find one without a Cat.

If my memory is correct, the small frame 305-400 Versies got their Cat transmissions starting in late 2011.

There was a update on transmission from Versatile find out if it was done, would not be afraid of a 12 speed, Scott.
