Looking for any tips on operation of these tractors in cold weather feeding hay, my definition of cold is +10F to below zero whatever. Right now i'm mixing diesel 50/50 with K1, of course plugging in the coolant heaters at-least 2 hours before operation, & covering the fuel filters with a section of cardboard. What is everyone else doing?

It's also good to put some cardboard on the side screens. Not only to help the tractor warm up better, but it stops the fan from drawing so much cold air past the fuel tank. Also we found the best starting aid is 2 12v batteries instead of 2 6v. You need new cables but they spin much faster.

Also I have heard of people running 5W-40 during the winter. I have not done. My tractors sit in the shed after Nov unless we get 15 inches of snow every week like last year. :-(

Good clean fuel filters. Good batteries. Working block heater. Number one fuel. When it gets below zero I will slip a old seed sign in between the radiator and oil cooler. Seems like if you run them everyday they just work better.

The 4230 ran this mixer for three winters and this will be the second year on vt144. We also run a 4430 on a bale processor almost daily.

5w-30 oil or a 0w-40 synthetic works good too.

And a gear reduction starter. I put a cheap ($200) gear reduction starter from Abilene Machine on one, and it started better with one 12v battery than another 4440 I had that came with a new Deere starter and two 12v batteries. I'd never have thought it would have made that much a difference.

AB.
install a circulating block heater, we put a pan heater under neatht the oil pan. and cardboard on the sidescreens or between the rad and cooler would work. 0W40 oil is a good one too. Good to -10F. Or build a heated shop.

Plug it in at least. We have found that adding HEET to the fuel works well and haven't had any problems with it. Otherwise in fall we only change oil in it. Those three things and our 4440 is going to break 9000 hours this winter and we haven't had a lick of trouble with it. We use it on the snowblower.

One thing that will make the most difference to start deere tractors is a auto hydraulic pump destroking kit.

Yes they are pricy but they will pay back in batteries, starters and frustration.

When you go to start all these tractors with lots of hours on them...the front hydraulic pump starts pumping oil and it kills the starter.

This kit will take the pump out of stroke while the starter is engaged and the motor will spin over like you have never seen.

It will start better than new...I cannot believe so few know of this awesome solution to deere starting woes.

For years I would always use straight 10 weight oil in the winter months in my loader and grinder tractors. My dad used to do it so I just followed suit. Haven't done that for years however, just use 15-40 year round now.
