It's been done. I don't have any photos handy, but a fellow by the name of Buster Peterson used to build such units for Caterpillar back in the 60's and 70's. I think the biggest unit he created was a triplex which was operated by a guy in an elevated cab over the middle unit. Generally they were only used on large dam projects or mines where they could be committed to working in the same place for several months or years at a time. Biggest problem was transporting them, as they were too cumbersome to move on a road without being disassembled.

I used to operate 637's twin engine scrapers. I would get one of those and I think you could/would get a lot more done especially if not able to have a push cat to help load. The single engine 631 always needed a push to load enough to get anything done where the others could push/pull or self load if not near the dozer in the cut.

bad you must have a lot of dirt to move. we built a lot of interstate roads in the 60s with them good units. I try to reinvent things myself and it generaly cost me a bunch of money and most of the time dont work that well anyway ha ha but Id say go for it, good luck archie

Those scrapers had a hydraulic-operated tow bar in the front that dropped over a ball (or pin) on the back of the other one...I've seen them on youtube-see if I can find it again...

this isn't the same video, but you can see the bars on the front of the 657's...SoCalEarthmovers has some cool vids...
