Subject: 4230 with slow hydraulics stumped. Help please

I have a 4230 SYNCRO, no AC, had if for 10 years. Last winter the hydraulics were super slow. Worked on it this summer and had the JD tech out. Closest JD dealer is 150 miles and they charged me $600 for a 30 minute test of Hydraulic pressures and left. So heres where we are at. I have the JD Manuals and an IT Manual and pressure gauges.

Has 2250-2300 stand by pressure.
Clutch pressure is 119 at all RPM, with front pump destroked or not. No change with PTO on or off. 0Lbs with clutch in.
Lube pressure is 2 or 3 lbs at idle and 20 at PTO speed.

Testing pressure at the T block under the right side cab, stand by is 2250-2300, if I use any remote pressure drops to 1700 and remote works for a second and pressure drops to 700 and it stops or goes very slow. If I release it will jump up pressure and I can use it for a second. If I hold it it will slowly rise up in pressure till it moves again.
3 pt is affected as is difflock
Some times steering is affected as well.
Trans filter is good as well as screen was not plugged.
JD oil in it.
Trans pump was pulled and checked, it is good and orings are good on it. Trans pressure relief valve is good as well.
I cant get to the pressure valve in the rock shaft to check that for sticking as it needs the lift arm removes and its stuck tight on the shaft.
Destroking front pump doesn't help it. Pulled stroke control and its free and clean.

Is it my front pump? What am I missing? This didn't get worse little by little it did it over night. Some one has been here before. Remember this is the rare syncro trans, no AC Thanks guys.

I would check your priorty valve in the rockshaft, also the clutch pressure sounds kinda low.

Clutch pressure should be 138 I believe, its 119 so its low... Any suggestions on how to get the lift arm off the side of the rock shaft to get to the pressure valve?

Fruita CO
Sounds like your main pump is making pressure but no volume-scored or stuck pistons? How many hours on it?
If you really want to check the pressure control valve, just break the elbow-stick a bar in it & bust it off. Then you can turn it out & replace it with the new style that swivels. Those lift arms are impossible to get off...

I read your post three times and a couple things I do not understand. First of all being Syncro-Range or a Quad-Range will require same testing procedure, your just not going to have a leaking two speed. When you say the transmission pump has been inspected why was the right hand lift arm not removed while the rockshaft was off? The rockshaft housing must be off to see the trans. pump. And if the rockshaft housing was off was the plate bolted under the casting checked for a crack or blown packing? The return oil from the selective control valves and rockshaft must return into the charge side of the system with out leakage to sump. I would remove the oil filter relief valve housing from the left side of the tractor, down by the filter, and look for a stuck or object lodged in one of the valves. Hope this helps. One other thought I forgot. If a dealer sends a tech out 150 miles to do a hydraulic diagnostic test with out a flow meter please show them the way back out the drive. I can guess what is wrong over the phone.
