Subject: Cummins N-14 oil pressure problem

Glasgow, Ky

This past winter when starting my N-14 it was very sluggish building oil pressure.  In fact, on more than one occasion, it would shut down due to low pressure.  A secondary problem I have is the oil pressure gauge is not working properly.  After starting and running at low RPM's revving it up to about 1,500 RPM's pegs the oil pressure gauge and that is where it stays no matter what RPM's the engine is turning.  Do I need to be looking at replacing the gauge, oil pump or something else?

Check and change the o-rings on the suction tube. Do it before it costs you an engine.

A key question I would have is, is the oil pressure gauge driven by a separate sensor, or the same sensor that reports to the ECM?

I'd start by checking the oil pressure with a known-accurate, hand-held mechanical gauge. If the pressure is indeed low, I'd check the piston coolers first (at least the ones easy to get to). Cam bearings like to wear on those engines as well, which could also be the cause of low pressure.

We lost an oil pump on ours. Mechanic said it is common on that engine. I didn't believe the gauge but mechanic connected a mechanical gauge and determined there was actually no oil pressure. Cost us a turbo.

Mine was doing the same thing and I had a broke piston coolant nozzle. They can be pulled out and replaced from the outside of motor on right side above the oil pan.

There is a separate sensor for ECM on those engines. Dash gauge is normally mechanical gauge and ECM is electronic sensor. This is on a celect engine. The n-14 mechanical May be different.

The gauge needed to be changed last winter

if pressure is still wacky the piston coolers
then have heard of the key shearing on the drive coming out of the acc housing

Ron, as others have posted need to install a mechanical gauge, agree with oil cooler nozzles, possible relief valve could be sticking, can be removed and inspected, its on bottom of pump, retained by a bolt and clamp, oil pump is a press fit, they do slip, normally when this happens you have no oil pressure, would troubleshoot asap, or its gonna get real spendy, Scott.
