Subject: What's the proper way to replace this joint on center pivot? pics

Alentejo, Portugal
My new (1st season) pivot has blown a joint between pipes, right next to the final tower. Can it be replaced without taking the whole tower down? It is 5" pipe and has a 18 meter overhang.

Eastern Arkansas
Put 2 people with all tools in backhoe bucket and raise it up from underneath. Pick up with slight pressure on pipe on the long side of the pipe wih track hoe, I just wrap a chain around the pipe. Loosen bottom 3 bolts all the way but do not remove. Take all the rest of the bolts completely out. Raise pipe a little until you get a gap. Takeaway few 3/4 bolts that are 1 inch long and have the end ground to a v like a chisel and hammer them in he gap to spread it out more. Do this around the sides and bottom leaving the top open. Once gap is wide enough clean out old gasket and drop new ones in. If gap will not get wide enough you might have to replace 3 bolts 1 at a time with longer bolts. They make new gaskets that don't go completely around the bolt and will drop right into place.

Clear as mud right. I usually replace 10 to 12 a year and this is what works for me.

To prevent this from happening in the future buy Reinke pivots. They have enclosed orings rather than gaskets.

If it's just a year old I would make whoever put it up come fix it.

Actually I misunderstood after looking at the picks it looks like its on the end past the end tower. I don't have any idea how to fix it.

Have been trying all morning, with no luck of getting any gap. We've lifted span, lifted overhang, used one of those dead jacks to try and create a gap but nothing.... They are now tearing it down.

Edit, dealer send 2 guys over but I think I know more then they do...

We've never done it ourselves because we didn't think we had the equipment to do it safely.  I think to replace that one it will take a crane or boom truck to support the inside pipe and one to support the overhang. If it weren't the end tower one boom truck would do it.

We have an excavator and a couple of wheel loaders so that is not the problem. Lifting the overhang put pressure on the joint so they took whole tower down. After lunch we'll see if we can replace it. It is right were pipe and trusses come together. ..

Look at his location.  I suspect his choices are limited.

I tried looking at Reinke. Saw sales rep for my area at Farm Progress Show. "I'll be in your area next month" Never saw or heard from him again.  Similar for T/L. I called the local dealer and said I was looking at buying 5 systems. Couldn't get a salesman to even call me.  That's why we have 5 new Valley's

Dennis, All I know is from watching other folks do it.I wouldn't think taking the whole tower down is necessary.  Perhaps fully disconnect it so the tower and overhang are supported by the wheels and something holding up the overhang, but not take it down all the way

Don't worry, all major brands are sold here. This one is a "Western", made in Saudi Arabia by Alkorayef Industries. it's a copy of Valley. Drive motors are UMC, gearboxes are made in Oregon.

You are right in a way that it is a copy of a Valley, but "Western" is a brand that Pierce owns and is probably made under license from them.

Could be. Valley dealer told me that it used to be a factory producing pivots under the Valley licence. They didn't do it according to Valley standards, lost their licence. But they kept the drawings and continued making them. Only with different electronics

I would think you could make trusses and place at 180 degrees with a large threaded turn buckle between them. Use half moon compression saddles. This would support the weight of the pipe and allow you to spread the joint with the turn buckles.

I was actually thinking of making some sort of hydraulic jack that you could clamp onto the pipe on each side...
