I just painted my M and 450. 2 gallons of paint (I used the paint bought from Case dealership but should have used an automotive paint with hardener instead).

Guess it depends on what you already have for equipment and free time! I don't think I could give an honest answer for total cost but heck of lot cheaper than paying someone

jcfarmboy, your work looks good! What model of paint gun did you use? What ratio of thinner did you use with the paint thru the gun. Thanks!

It does look good but how long will it look good? I don't understand why people are scared to use something other than implement store paint. Something like an acrylic enamel will cost more but hold up much, much better. I painted a lot of tractors over the years and never used anything but a charcoal filter mask. I ended up with leukemia. Was it caused by the painting, the farm chemicals, or just bad luck? I don't know, but if I had to do it over again I wouldn't paint without a supplied air system. Those are expensive. If it were me, I would pay someone with the experience and equipment for the job.

As Illinois Steve said use automotive paint (higher grade paint) it's worth it. Here is a 10 year old paint job of DuPont Centari with clear coat taken a couple days ago when I washed this tractor....better than factory. So slick and easy to wash. Next is an 8 year old factory painted tractor...ok but no comparison. We have been using PPG Omni for a few years because of supplier... Both excellant paint, and we are not professionals.

The cheap gun....it was my first true "kick at the can" I will look at the brand tommorrow. I was happy how it turned out concidering my inexperience. The paint didn't require thinner.

Scared wasn't the word.....inexperience and lack of knowledge would be the correct words. I will use automotive paint for the next tractor (farmall H that is already in the shop getting ready to dig into). I might redo the M depending on how the H turns out.

What is the correct "code" to make sure the red is the correct color? Or what's the correct way to order?

As for masks I use a good quality dual cartiage and don't plan on painting much more. But your point is very well taken! Paint shops want more to paint than the tractor is worth.....

The heck of it is an acrylic enamel system is five times easier to work with than just an enamel with or without hardener. You get the product along with very good instructions about how to mix the paint, activator, reducer, hardener etc.. I was kind of intimidated about using the stuff too because it was so expensive compared to the implement store paint. Ten minute after spraying my first gun full of the good stuff and I swore I would never again paint with straight enamel. The acrylic lays out much nicer and does not run anywhere near as easy. The best part is if you screw up a little and get a run or something you can shave it, scuff it and repaint in the next day because the stuff cures so quick.

I used the dual cartridge mask too and thought I was well protected. If I had know then what I know now I would have spent the money for a supplied air system or not done the painting. It runs in my mind that a decent supplied air system can be had for around $1200.

Steve: your making me little nervous now! I might just look into the fresh air system now.....

Sorry to hear about your health issue. Thanks for the heads up and advice! I'm thinking of just having an autobody shop do it. Can't put a price on health.

Well that old H was my great uncle's first tractor. My uncle inherited it and then handed it over to me as my "wedding present". I haven't the foggiest idea how long she has been sitting, atleast 25 years. Engine was free with good compression so its going to get a quick carb rebuild and tune up.
It isn't a "true" restoration as both tractors are now switched over to 12 volt with electronic ignition.

Will know this week if there will be life in the gal or she is a lame horse.

What's the story behind your super M? Have your family always kept her in use? Are you going to do an engine job? If you have any questions just ask away!!! The guys on this board are TOP NOTCH. They pulled my bum from the fire multiple times. I can help where needed to.

Let me know what you find out about that H.
My grandpa baught it in 48' and farmed with the super M for quite a long time and my then great uncle did. Back a number of years ago it had a hole new front end put on it after it had motor problems. my uncle used at as a feed cart tractor then it sat in the weeds for a number of years. One day my and my father decided to see if the motor was free. Pulled it down the hill and pop started it and it ran like a dream after a tank of gas ran through it. Its been sitting in shed for a few years and i got the random idea one day to restore it. It will be my first restoration. My grandpa would love to see it like "new" again.

Best day of my life was when I took the M and the 450 back to the farm in all their glory and seeing my grandfather start to tear up when they both fired right up. Those gals were his workhorses and he still claims he should have bought four of each to make his life easier not having to switch implements like the cultivator and corn picker.

Well I found some time today to finish installing the electronic ignition and do the carb rebuild. Flushed the fuel tank and line and put it together. Maybe four revolutions and she came back to life!!!! Runs great,no missing /backfiring doesn't miss a beat when I reved up a few hundred rpm (wanted to keep it low until I made sure it wasn't going to explode).

So I guess few hours washing and prepping for paint and back to work she goes.
