Subject: 3 pt boom mower recommendations

I'm needing to update our old Woods 3pt hyd side arm ditch mower. Mainly use it to mow creek banks but would also like to be able to trim tree limbs along fence rows. Looking on the "net" I have found several different makes. The two that appear to fit the bill best are a Bush Hog RMB 1445 & a Diamond 14 STD. Anyone own /operate one of these mowers.? If so, what are the pros / cons of each? Flail or rotary cutting head, I think the rotary cutter would be best for brush. I am leaning towards the Bush Hog with a rotary cutting head. For one, there are several dealers within an hours drive compared to only one Diamond dealer. I would be putting it on a CIH Maxxum 115 w loader, mfd, and three sets of rear weights. Tractor weight is approx 6500# not including the loader & wheel weights. Would this be a big enough tractor to handle the extra weight hung out to the side or would I need to add fluid to the rear tires? Any other brands you would recommend?

TIA,
boog

Never been around a Bush Hog but have ran a Hardee and they are about the same. light weight in my opinion works good on small limbs but can't take much big stuff. Look at a Amadas lots of them in my area and are built very heavy.

I'm of the opinion, Diamond brands are made heavier duty then the Bush Hog -

Diamond is a direct competitor of all the Alamo Group companies (bush hog, Tiger, rhino, woods, and a couple brands from the southern region) - Diamond are made (along with some of the Alamo groups brands) for commercial use . . ..

Here's some info on Diamond -

Diamonds are manufactured in Sioux Falls SD (so is Tiger Brand) They both are heavy duty commercial.

You can never have too much counter weight for boom mowers (and especially 3pt mowers). You can look at the specs of the diamond and see if your tractor has the "balance" for the mower you chose.

Our Twp has a Diamond mid-mount boom mower on 6430 JD FWA with Diamonds weight pkg . . . I want to add more ballast on the 3pt and hang it to the right - it can throw the tractor around in the right conditions, extended boom out or high and out trying to trim branches . . . .. .

My preference would be a Tiger Brand (fit and finish) is better then Diamond, but diamonds are commercial duty tuff . . .

Edit: Oh, Parts for Diamond are easy to order - direct from Diamond and in our area, next day received . . . . and, there have been hundreds of 115's used on boom mowers (mostly mid-mount)

Edit Again: Yes, the rotary head is the head to get for brushing . . . Flail - no . . .. to many flying parts (at the tractor and traffic) when brushing.

Don't think Woods is part of Alamo Group.

NW Washington
Tiger has a bunch of different types of boom mowers and flails. http://www.tiger-mowers.com/all_products.php
Flail mower are often rear maintenance headaches.
