Speaking of loud stereos, is it the custom in parades in your part of the country to start every parade with 15 fire trucks full lights and sirens and blowing the air horns? Cops usually help out with the noise too.

Who comes up with this kind of nonsense?

I have never understood what is so enjoyable about being 40' from a fire truck siren going by at 1 mph.

Just about won't go to a parade just for that reason.

+1.

That is a very big annoyance, and a very good reason to send this message to those
firemen and others in a parade this summer. The siren is not needed and does not impress !!!

Parade organizers, take note, post a no siren rule for your emergency vehicles, we don't need
it.

They do the same thing here. I'm not sure why. I was on the local vfd for several years. Just don't do like me another guy and not turn the siren on and have the pa on and talk about all the people as you go by them. While they can here you. We had the windows up and ac cranked and didn't know anything till the chief called on the radio to shut up or shut the pa off.

What we have here is a classic example of a First World problem. :-) The grumpy old farts don`t like it, and the kids go nuts when they hear it.... always gonna be someone with a beef .

Yeah, here too. Just as parade was getting to main group of people, one had a call to go to, he had a heck of a time, the kids just thought it was all part of the parade and crowded forward to get candy.

I'm good with sirens. Train horns on floats seems to be "in" here, less than good with that

We live near a rural village called Koszta- Hence Koskid. we decided to have a presence in the local town parades with the Polaris 500 and a couple of water extinguisher and used a little police whistle. I got in line between a couple of the local towns big firetrucks, and whenever there was a break in the sirens, I would blow the whistle. It sure got a lot of laughs from the spectators.

We don't mind it and the kids love it.
We even added our share of the racket by installing a "Original Hollywood Wolf Whistle" to Don's GB Moline parade toy.

Owned that thing since the 60's It lay out in the weather for at least 20 years, so the operating valve and air motor were rusted tight. An 8 month soak in Hagen's brew and a good cleaning with wire and compressed air got it going again.

Added a few WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP WEEEEEE noises to the other racket. Lighten up, unless overdone, it's a great celebration :)

I wondered why there couldn't be a parade volume setting and the regular emergency volume setting so that you could actually hear the school band. The various sounds that an emergency vehicle makes are entirely generated by electronics since the old motor driven sirens are long ago collector items.

Used to be the sheriff would start off the 4th of July parade with a shot fired in the air. The current one doesn't do that, maybe it's not PC now.

I used to be on a VFD and worked EMS for 6 years. Policy at all the parades we were in: Lights only,,,,, in the event there was an emergency sirens would be used, so people knew to get out of the way! Oh, and we used to keep a little distance between the entries also. Our parades would be darn short if there was only 8-10 feet between the entries.

The problem at our county fair now is the people along the route got tired of being sprayed with water from the floats and fire trucks so they hook up their garden hoses and spray back.

Subject: Fire Mule in parades

West Union, Illinois

We joke my Kawasaki Mule is our 4th fire truck ... but it isn't much of a joke.  I have a 40 gallon tank and 12 volt pump we mount on it to water newly planted tress that works out well for grass fighting.  During deer season it generally is either loaded on a trailer or close by, ready to go to the woods and assist an injured hunter.

For our Independence Day celebration I have a blue light bar I strap on top, throw a spare battery (powers the light bar), couple fire extinguishers and first aid kit in back, and it spends most of the day at the park as a quick response rig.  Our July 4th parade is sponsored by our Ruritan Club.  As a member of the club and Assistant Fire Chief I get the honor of being the end of the parade.  I tell folks when they see me they know it's all over.

Must be a "getting old thing". I agree with you, we took our two year old grandkids to a local parade last Saturday and between the local town cop and fire dept. there was plenty of sirens and air horns blaring. I didn't care for all the noise but it didn't seems to bother the grandkids one bit. I can honestly say I don't remember it bothering me when I was younger.

Wow! Very nicely done! I have an old MF 16 I'd like to restore and when talking to a couple of locals about the restoration they told me that they also were/are in the process of making an Oliver garden tractor. They said they have a lot of hours in the grill. Thanks, Joe.

So, you have it on authority right here on NAT:  IF kids love it, it has to be good.        lol

I seldom resist a "toot toot" anytime the kids "call for" "ripping the horn cord".

Yes, they are always gleeful with just the toot toot.

I think the blaring sirens/horns are for the satisfaction of those in control of the device more than for the satisfaction of the kids.  The noise of blairing sirens/horns make it impossible for any warning of real danger to be heard.

I thought it was illegal to throw candy from parade vehicles; the candy could be passed out by someone walking along the parade route.  Our recent celebration had the candy being thrown from the vehicles this year after some years when it did not happen.  I saw a little girl run dangerously close to the rear wheel of the co-op's sprayer.

She sure was enjoying picking up candy.  Heaven forbid that a funkiller would think that throwing out candy was not a great idea.   FUN FUN FUN

I'm a basement saver and I don't use the sirens. I see moms and dads covering their kids ears and little kids crying from the noise and if anything ruins fun times its kids crying.

Just curious here...how many people complaining of all these noises (sirens, stereos etc) can't get enough of the noise at a tractor pull??

Different strokes people...learn to be more accepting of others interests and likes.

Let's all hold hands and sing kum ba yah!    It is just too stressful and emotional to have opposing views expressed.  Or if you are alone, clutch you blanky with one hand and suck the thumb on the other.

All better now?

Do we all feel secure now?

Actually I was entertained by typical NAT rap with it's depth of thought: condemn all those who don't think like you for not being more accepting of others interests and likes.

Thanks for reminding me again, I needed a chuckle tonight.

We boast we've only lost one foundation.

Seriously.  It was an old house with a wood foundation sitting on rocks.
