Subject: John Deere Baler?

OK
I have just about decided to bite the bullet and purchase a new round baler. For the last few years, I generally cut and rake and my 87 year old neighbor bales with his old Vermeer baler, that's dang near as old as him. Long story short, hay on the ground yesterday that should be up in bales, got a half inch of rain on it, with more rain by Tuesday expected. I am looking at two different models of JD balers and leaning towards the 469 - it's a bigger, heavier model that will last me forever (we put up about 300 round bale/yr), but about $6200 more than the 459 model. Looking for thoughts and experiences with both these model balers - this will be my first round baler.

We went through the same thing last year. When you want to bale so does everyone else. We bought John deere 569 and love it. I would definitely get net wrap and get the big flotation tires. We only bale 300 a year ourselves. You won't regret buying your own.

Aren't the 469 and 459 basically the same baler except one has a 4 ft wide x 6 ft max dia bale and the other a 4 ft wide by 5 ft max dia bale?

I have a JD 569 and looked at it the same as you - this will last my lifetime at a couple hundred bales/year.  The mega wide pickup works incredibly well. I agree on ordering the larger tires.  The monitor works very well even on a smaller, older, open station tractor. I have settled on making 5 ft wide by about 66"(5-1/2 ft) diameter bales rather than 72" (6 ft) diameter as the 66" are lighter and much easier to handle than the 72".

What size bales do you want to make?  As you mention, the cost of a new baler, spread over time doesn't look so bad compared to hay getting rained on because a baler isn't working. A baler is one of those things you look at the ROI over time rather than just the initial cost, imho.

I would choose the new JD baler (459-569) based on the size bale you want to make.

Good luck.

Jim

I don't like rained on hay either! But a brand new baler for 300 bales a year? That's one good day of work! I don't care how much money you have to burn that would be a poor investment! Good grief. Go ahead flame away!

Buy the 469, the 459 appeals to a captive group. We have a premium 469 and regular 469, they will both eat hay.

Rick, I have the 569 standard model except for the mega wide pickup (which I would strongly recommend), larger tires and soft core option which I added last summer.  It is twine only as I didn't think it was worth $7000 to add netwrap for bales that would be in a shed.  Netwrap would be nice though.

I looked at a lot of high priced used balers and decided I can drive an old tractor but a new baler made sense. Good low bale count used balers I looked at were 2/3 the price of a new one.  A long term loan on a new baler made sense for my needs. I need a baler I can hook up to and go bale, not work on. There are quite a few improvements on the new ones such as better roller bearings.  This one works very well.  The gentleman I have been buying hay from has a JD baler even though it is about the only piece of green equipment on his farm. I would recommend the 569. It makes very tight bales which is why I added the soft core option ( a simple valve).

My philosophy with critical pieces of equipment such as machine tools, and balers, is to buy new, take care of it, and drive it until it drops. This has worked well for me.

For what a "good" 567 or 568 goes for (you define good on your own) and what JD will finance a new 569 for, that "might" be the way to go for him. Everyone figures it different. Myself, I will shop for a gently used 1 and let the other guy take the hit on depreciation. Bought our 568 as a year old, 1375 bales though it. Sitting at 10K now. Have tried to trade at the 12K mark with previous machines, think I might try to push this one a bit further. If all was perfect I'd buy a new one and keep this one...!

I just traded off a good 467 jd. for a 469 jd. I like 4 - 6 bales Lots easier to haul them in down the high way, they fit on an 8' wide wagon and can see around them. I have had NH. balers and Vermeer balers, but I really like my JD. balers. My old 467 JD. had a little over 14000 bales on it and a friend bought it and is still a baling machine. Have no troubles. Buy the 469 you will never regret it.

Brought first week of June in 1993. Bend the lift gate on a Vermeer 605F baler I was using to bale with then. Have a a lot of hay on the ground and went and brought a new baler out right ( no trade ) . I gave $ 17750. Brought from a JD dealer in my hometown. He was out of JD 535 balers and had to get the last one another dealer had. He told me I brought the 16th new JD round baler he sold new that year, mostly JD 535's.

+1  except depreciation is only a concern if you expect to sell or trade it.  When I buy a piece of equipment I look at it as if I am going to own it until I die.  You are correct with the financing.  There did not seem to be a good 568 or 569 with only 1375 bales when I was looking. Most had around 10-12,000 and they still wanted $20,000 or so for them. If they had 15,000 bales the price might come down to $16-17k.  There is generally a reason people traded them in at that point.

There are different ways to look at certain critical equipment purchases. With all the rain we are having this year, when you have a chance to bale it better work.

I also like the larger 5x6 ft or now 5 x 5-1/2 ft bales as they hold a lot more hay then a 4x5 ft bale. Which means fewer times I have to start a tractor in the winter and longer intervals between loading the feeders.

I dont go any bigger than 5.5' either and like this size of bales. Any smaller just makes for more work and if outside more surface area exposed. I really think you might should sell the old blue tractor and send it to Tn. and get you a better one.

I agree. 5 x 5.5 here as well, using a JD 566.
