Subject: Black Machine Planters ?

central - east central Minnesota -

I see a black machine planter in the classifies here . . . ..

Looking at it, (it's a split row planter - 12r30 or 7r15's), it appears the frame folds back around to the back for the splitter rows . . . .. .

Were there any issues with the frame hinge points holding up and work well ?
Does any other Mfger offer or make such an arrangement ?

Over all weight of the planter ? Overall reliability of the concept ?

Who bought them out or what happened to them ?

To me, it appears, it's a well executed concept - Not dragging around the added weight of interplants while planting corn in 30 inch rows, more even wear of all planting units at the same time.

That caught my eye as well. Sure seems like a pain to fill unless you unfold it then fill then fold back up.

I've had really good luck with ours. Have seen some where the hinge pins were worn and the wings got sloppy. Heard it blamed on running with box extensions while planting corn (folded out) to taking end rows too fast. I did see a few that had the wing wheel cylinder kit installed. From the factory there is nothing on the wings other than a "gauge wheel" which means theres a lot of weight hanging out there off the hinge point. My 1989 model doesn't have the hydraulic kit and it is tight at the hinges, so it's all in how big of a hurry your in on the end rows.

I've seen prices all over the place from $8k-$22k. You can find a very well kept unit that is field ready for around $14k. Look for one that has been updated to radial been meters.

black machines were frames were available with kinze, deere or white row units, I have not heard of any real problems with the frame. I believe they got bought out by agco. the same frame design was available as a white brand 6242, 6342 and 6346, the 46 was a 16 row version.(tractorhouse has a few) I do not have one but have looked at them a few times, filling while folded would be a pain. would be nice if you want to do 15in beans and 30 corn, would get old filling those front boxes during beans though, I would want to check into larger boxes for beans. think I would put step/platform on front of front frame for filling front boxes.

Had a white 6342 10 years ago

Basically same thing

Concept is unique

Great for planting corn, flex was incredible

Did a good job planting beans but was kinda interesting filling, course you lost width when folded

Weight was good when spread out for corn

When folded for transport and beans its heavy, and neg weight when up

Overall it did what it was supposed to do for us at the time, it replaced a wore out corn planter and a very well broken in drill with one machine that got over more acres more efficiently

Have since traded

I had one, and really liked it. As our farm has grown, at 15' planting beans took to long. The only problem I had with ours was that when folded they create negative tongue weight. A 4240 tractor with no extra weight didn't work so good in a wet year. As soon as we put it on the 4640 that problem went away. All in all it was a very good planter bar.

We had the white 16 row. In no tilling into alfalfa the out side wings would pull back enough that those rows would dog track and would not cover right. This was new planter. We also had no yield advantage in narrow beans versus 30" rows.

We had one and it worked great for us. We had the air shocks on ours with kinze units and precision corn meters and kinze bean meters

Used to be a couple in the neighborhood. They had to be folded from the drawbar, not the cab. One guy complained about always blowing the little drive tires. None around here anymore.

Had one for several years. Pulled with a 4010 JD with duals, then a 2294 Case with duals and a CAB!!! Great bar and pulled easy. The reason I traded was to go from about 18 ft transport to 12. 18 wouldn't fit thru shed doors. Still have some parts that won't work on my Kinze.
