First time out this year today with 1st generation baler. Worked pretty well until twine change over on #1 knotter from left, standing behind. Knot started hanging on bale hook or would break after tieing and would have to thread down form top. #2 changed over and had similar problems. got worse. discovered tucker finger bolt was gone. (Updated tucker fingers). Replaced bolt and #s 2, 3, and 4 would not tie at all. was able to get to talk to previous owner and he said I need a flat and lock washer under the finger. got 3s 2,3, & 4 back tieing shorty. Number 1 is still not right all the time. Knot will hang on bill hook at times and/or twine will break on what should be the first knot for new bale.

Frustrated to say the least.

Thanks in advance for advice,

Daryl

Haven't ran mine yet this year so I am a little rusty.  To start, make sure the twine tensioners are rolling free.  I have to sometimes adjust tension on the billhook when changing balls of twine if from a different company or to start out the year.  Also look at the tails on the knots that are holding together and read the book to see what needs adjusting.  Sorry I am not great help, but thanks for getting my mind thinking about it.

Thinking about it some more, make sure stripper arm is tight against billhook, may have to take a hammer to bend it up so that it slightly rubs the back of the billhook.  This is the green arrow in my picture below.  If the tails on the good knots are too short they can pull apart, that goes back to twine tension.  If the knotters are getting wore, you may have to adjust the twine disc somewhat, I usually guess and check.  Loosen the nut (bottom red arrow in picture) and bump the gears a slight amount to advance or retard the twine discs (top red arrow in the picture).  The second picture is the tails I am talking about on knots.  This one is too short in my opinion.

Make sure the rollers throughout the twine threading system turn freely and the twine is properly in the "groove". When the roller bearings are locked up for a long period the twine actually cuts into the metal and can prevent the smooth pull on the twine. I have seen some rollers split in half and the twine sporadically hangs up or is pinched between the roller and needle frame. Also Try to feed the windrow into the center of the header.

I agree with checking out the stripper arm first. Also, did the baler change over from one type of twice to another or did you stay with the same brand and strength of twine?

I agree with LNS8310, it is very often the wiper arm needs to be adjusted tighter (BFH will do it).

Another problem I had on the old JD100 (single knot system) was a very slightly bent bill hook itself (perhaps worn), pretty much invisible, but enough to make you pull your hair out on the extremely high tension Deere setup. I have never seen this on a Hesston (double knot system) because of the lower tension, but I assume it could happen at some point, requiring new billhook.

And I didn't quite get what happened to your tucker fingers, but make sure they are operating smoothly and in time as they can cause some strange occurences. Are your needles timed correctly as well? I forget their symptom, but their timing and angle is of course pretty critical. Run it through a few cycles by hand (put the kids to cranking on the flywheel, that was always my job so I never got to see how knotters worked until much older) to check.

I had the same issue last year. Check, double check, and triple check ALL twine rollers and tensioners. It will make the world of difference. That was my problem, and after about 100 dollars worth of parts i was back baling in less than 4 hours.

Let me know how it goes

Got it going. Baled today without problems. Don't know why twine finger on #1 got out of alinement or if bolt on #2 broke or what else but seems better. Adjusted finger on #1. Checked rollers and tensioners. Thanks for your help.

Need to check cam bearings. Next seem to be loose.

Thanks again,

Daryl
