IA | Anyone know the difference between a d61 and a d65 dozer other than the 6way on the 61 and the semi u on the 65? Ritchie bros site has the d61 weighing more than the d65? I assume komatsu dozers are a powershift/ torque convertor type tranny rather than a hydro. Is that correct? thanks |

Somerville, Indiana | We have leased a 65 a couple years, with straight blade for production, not grading....The 61 with 'inside blade' has all the cobble in front that weighs in more than we may think, also a lot of pins bushings and hoses to deal with...Also a 61 with wider or longer roller frame will catch on several pounds against a 65 with standard length roller frame and narrow track shoes...Disadvantage to the Komatsu is they change models and major parts more often than the ones favored here, that deters short line companies from building fast moving parts that tractors working in sand and dirt use in time if they are to be in service...email works, I know I have a hard time making sense at times.
Forgot to add the Komatsu is very user friendly and with their recent cabs are a joy to operate...Operating expence/hour is what is a little vague here.

Southeast Florida | We had a D61 and it was a nightmare for us being use to CAT equipment. I think they're great machines as long as the dealer does all the work. When they get a little age on them they have poor resale value and parts are difficult to get. Dave Morgan fairly well summed up that issue. After owning 1 Komatsu dozer that was bought cheap to begin with I will never have another even if it was free. I our environment when we need a dozer it's usually because somebody is stuck in a sugarcane harvesting situation. We don't have time to fix junk and wait on parts. Our yellow iron is 100% CAT just for the parts and service because it damn sure isn't for the cheap parts. |

Hannibal, MO | There is a lot of different variables in your question. Older -12 and early -15 dozers have different engines. 61 has cummins 505 where the 65 had the komatsu 125 engine which is a bigger engine and higher hp. When they went to tier 3 they both got the same engine just different hp. Undercarriage depends if it an ex or px. Px is wide pad ex is shorter pads longer undercarriage. Ex are popular on the 65 where px is on 61 because the blade is wider. There was a straight 65E-12 that had steering clutches. Otherwise they both have differential steering and torque converter. Both are good dozers if they have been maintained. They do make a newer 65 with a 6 way blade. No idea of the numbering of it is. |
