Subject: What do you run for starter fertilizer in corn and why?

Croswell, Michigan
I have only used either straight 10-34-0 or a combo of 10-34-0 and 28%. This year I am using the combination again as last year I thought my corn was hurting a little for N by the time I started side dressing. I know others add zinc, thio-sol and a whole list of other things. Am I leaving money on the table(or in my pocket) by not having a coctail in my starter?

as always I will ask have you considered fish, time and time again you will get more nitrogen in your plant by establishing root system to capture nitrogen that you have applied to the soil rather then just putting more nitrogen on or putting it closer to the seed. fish is not corrossive to you $200000 planter, i have put as much as 75 gal per ac of fish on top of corn, beans and wheat with no hurting germ, Fish serves as a great carrier, catalyst, and you can even use it to lubricate your roller chains(yes double purpose). most wont even consider it cause they only think with a n,p and k mind, but i think you have already learned you can only get so much with more n, p, and k. I buy water soluble micros that soil test calls for and add them and then also add them to a dry blend also. I feel i eliminated my fungal problems by building my copper numbers within two years, I add part of my soybean innoculant to my fish and it aids in keeping the inoculant cool when it gets to be so hot at the later warm part of bean planting season. yes it smells, but those little critters in the soil like that smell and those little critters are what will protect your seed from the bad little critters that make you loose sleep. Just some thoughts from a stay at home dad whois having a blast today

fish got a bad rap in the 80's when fish companies were trying to just get rid of by waist and get paid for it. there was 20 years of chaos and filters plugged. now almost all of them are using alot more sulferic acid, better cookers/filters and technology makes for a much better product. i used 5 gal of fish and then add one gal of water for every pound of copper or other micro i added. the fish is screened pretty well anymore and i think the only problems i had in last 12 years was from when i add my bacteria to it and dont get tanks washed out at end of season. it will start to grow in there and must be washed out. the fish does freeze so i think its important to rinse out really well at end of season and drain all product out so it doesnt freeze. good luck

Depends on what your crop is telling you. Here the Thio sul pays. We are very short on sulfer. Your soils might be different. Need to look at the whole picture.

There is a great deal of work that says a corn plant determines it's yield potential at a very early stage. It is therefore helpful to have the healthiest plant possible. The nutrients should be close to the plant so it can since yikes potential. But you must follow it with the rest of the fertility program to finish this off.

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan

I don't know what options are for liquid, but I really like potash in the starter.  John, do you put you potash on in the fall or spring.  It take about 6 months for potash to break down.  We are dry, but do vrt potash in the fall and put a 8-12-20 down in a 2x2.  I like to have lots of potash close to the plant in case of a dry year.  If it's really dry, potassium is very, very critical for a corn plant.

Where do you get this Fish? What exactly is it? Waste fishery products? Do you put it in the furrow? I have seen you mention that it is a type of amino acid, is that correct?

NC Indiana
28% and Thiosul. Even the big guys that do tillage are running a little N with some S. The corn yields much better with S vs no S and better with S by planter vs S by broadcast, my experience, my farm. So if you where farming my farm without S in your program, yes you would be leaving a nice pile of money in the field.

i have tried alot of fishes, some good some bad, but if you are trying to keep your planter going and not have problems and then if you are trying to work with somone who is going to bring you semi loads rather then toats you will end up using schaffers. 563 249 9119 is their number, there is alot of companies that have sent me a better product but what good is it if you cant get it applied to your feild and it plugs up your planter. yes it stinks, and yes its something differant but its freindly to your plant, freindly to your help, and freindly to your planter. as always I will say if you need nutrients, buy them dry and use fish to buy yourself root system to find them nutrients and moisture in your soil.
