Subject: help! 4640 won't start

Ohio
Jumped in the 4640 today and turned the switch. Nothing happened and heard a "boing" under the dash like a spring. Turned key off and heard same noise. Turn key on and don't hear the noise until I try to start it. Both batteries have 6 volts. Any help would be appreciated.

My 46 makes the same noise every time I turn the key on, and starts, so to me that's normal.

i would try to jump it just to make sure that the batts are charged up good you can read six volts per bat and still not have enough amp to crank it . just went though this with our 4640 a month ago. this winter was hard on older batteries

Have someone attempt starting the tractor while you hold a test light on the small wire on your starter solenoid. If no light you may have neutral safety problems (or possibly battery issues) If it lights, then you have starter issues. The accessory solenoid you are hearing is acting normal. EDIT: Sometimes a light rap or two on the side of the starter with a hammer will get you going in a pinch. That is a short term repair though.

On my 4430, there is a "cab" solenoid under the "dash" cover right behind the clutch pedal that makes a noise like you are referring to.

When you first turn on the key (and don't hit the starter) does the radio or cab fan work? Even if it doesn't make the noise?

I used to have to replace that solenoid quite often, but I don't remember it ever causing the starter not to turn over. Or does it turn over but just not start?

The 4430 has a pull-cable for shutoff, does the 4640 turn off with the key switch or a cable?

I'm wondering if the cab solenoid is going bad and the non-start is being caused by something more like a neutral safety switch (if the engine doesn't even turn over).

Could be neutral safety start switch. Run it in and out of park a few times and try again. Is on right side of transmission IIRC. Plug with two wire connector running to it.

Make sure you have a real good ground at batteries. JD's are fussy on that. Just changed the starter solenoid on 2940 which acted the same way as your 4640.

Thanks for all the advice. Checked most of the things you guys said and ended up being the neutral switch. Cycled the ranges shifter in and out a few times before I posted this but after cycling the other shifter a couple times it fired right up. Felt a little silly but learned something today. Thanks again

Take the neutral switch out & remove all the aluminum shims,if there's any in it. It won't leak, but put a little silicone on the threads if you're worried about a leak...the shifter cam shaft gets more end play as it wears, & it's not pushing the switch far enough.
