North Central Kansas | We are looking at buying a swather and have come across a John Deere 1424 windrower. Anybody had any trouble with these? I've seen lots of 1600s for sale but not many of these. Thanks

Marion,ks | I had a 1600A I was very happy to be rid of it. I have a jd956 disc mower now and it enjoyable to cut hay again. I never could get the 1600A to do a good job and not have issues we had 1014 hesstons and a old 114 New Holland and I wished I had the New Holland back towards the end of the 1600As time on the farm. I really like the JD 956 .We put up mostly grass hay and I did not plug it once last year. I heard the older JD swathers were even worse then the 1600s.

ecmn | its odd that you had issues with the 1600a. they are still being made. they are very easy to get to do a remarkable job. the old self propelled were a little crude on the cab compared to what guys are used to today. but they were easy to operate, cut fast and cheap. I cut a couple hundred acres with a neighbors old 2280 and it was fun. I never knew a guy could cut hay so fast. lol

Western WI | Self propelled Deere swathers started getting decent in the mid 80s. We have had a few different ones. 2420s are nice, but the 3430/3830 and all the way up to the new ones just keep getting better. 2280s and similar are ok, but the cabs are not nice. 2420s have cabs similar to the 6620/7720 deere combines and are nice and quiet and great visibility. If you are not in a hurry look around for a 3430/3830. Also are you wanting an auger header for cutting grasses and hay? Or a draper platform for small grains? Depepnding on how wide of a cut you are looking for I have a 12ft 3430 sitting in the shed with 146X hours. Auger header.

Marion,ks | In all honesty I think the 1600A I had was jinxed. It had a new tongue on it when I bought it when it was a year old . The sale I bought it at was because the dealer was killed in a fork lift accident at his store and after I traded it off the farmer that bought had a tornado hit his farm and drop his machine shed on it. We put up mostly brome and praire hay and a disc mower is the best machine for that, I can cut half again faster with out fear of plugging it up, my biggest issue was where the two sickles overlapped.

ecmn | I could see that. different crops cut differently. in clean alfalfa they are a dream but its hard to match the speed of the other heads.

Eastern Iowa | My uncle had a 1600 and I don't remember him ever having a good thing to say about it. But it was a center pivot design before any of the disc types were.

central ne | there are two things JD NEVER could get right MOCOS and DISCS just paint it green and come out with a new model should say three Mid sized square balers .1600 & 1600a were junk the only good feature was the crusher rolls opened up so you didnt have to spend as much time digging them out when they plugged because the hyd pump wouldnt pull a sow out of a mud hole.
