Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

I would check concrete plants, that build feed bunks.

Here's an old thread, but these are South of you, I believe:

You sure u want cable ? I bought new cable. Later posted here, "how to stop cattle from throwing feed over the bunk". Someone posted to put pipe in place of cable.  Found a place making pipe mounting brackets to put pipe on rather than cable. So I have bout 130 ft of almost new cable.

We put cable in and hate it, moves way to much hard to keep tight with cattle leaning on it all the time. Use pipe or tubing

I have cable and will go to guardrail next time...but here is the best cable!

http://www.westechrigging.com/wire-rope-ehs-716.html 7/16" 7 strand

http://www.westechrigging.com/wire-rope-ehs-012.html 1/2" 7 strand

Stiff and harder to work with but won't fray.

Not to steal the post. But this brings up a frustration for me too, how do you keep the cable tight and what do you use for adjustment on the ends to keep it tight? pics ?

Most scrap yards have a pile of it that they would sell dirt cheap or give it away. No one wants to fool with having to cut it into 3ft pieces to go in the shredder.

I bought 400 feet off a winch from a local yard for a case of barley flavored water.

Also, check a local crane company or a crane dealer. When we used to replace crane load line cable it was usually for just one nick or tweak and we sold the old stuff cheap to make it go away. Excavating companies and farmers with dozers bought most of it to pull buildings and trees over.

Driftless SW Wisconsin
I use a big turnbuckle at one end to stretch it tight. On a longer length of bunk I'd put a turnbuckle at each end. Make sure your end anchor points are sturdy or it will still loosen.

I agree, we replaced all cable with 7/8 sucker rod. Much better

Don't use old cable, or any fine wired cable because it will fray and have sharp edges that can cause abscesses when the cattle chew on it. We had some used cable we got for free and it wasn't worth it...I took it off after a week.

Thomas wire rope in Moore, ok. They ship at reasonable rates. We use recovered oilfield 3/8 shot line. Solves most problems, and for the price you can't beat it.

I'm kind've sorry for asking the question about where to find bunk cable-only to find out that we have been doing things wrong since the early 70's with these bunks and cables! Guess I will step out and buy both sucker rods and guard rail next week! No offense but what works for one doesn't work with everyone else. I will check around with some of the replies to specific cement plants which make bunks.
I'm just a little sarcastic on a Friday nite after a couple of drinks!

Thanks

For your next meal jam your neck tight against some guard rail, now try it with a cable that moves as you eat, see which one is more comfortable. I'm guessing by the mark on your neck you like the cable a little better.

all over Iowa
Saw this in a new barn in Ohio a few weeks ago. I know it's not sucker rod, but it looked pretty clean and secure for adjustment.

Eastern Iowa
I've found that hardened guy wire cable, like the stuff #0 power line is wrapped around in overhead electrical applications, is the longest lasting cable for bunks. Sort of a pain to work with, but doesn't fray nearly as quickly. Tension with an eye bolt and a spring off an old baler tensioning arm on the back side of the post/wall. 6 inches of spring is usually plenty.
