Subject: 2 speed rear axle on C60 Chevy grain truck

West Central Iowa
Recently bought a '72 C60 grain truck and the 2 speed rear end does not shift (stays on the low side). With the two speed button one direction, one vacuum line to the rear end had vacuum and the other was static (no pressure) and when the button was in the other direction both lines had vacuum. We took apart the vacuum "canister" and the diaphragm was in good shape. Took the assembly off the axle housing and got the shifting fork to move into the high side but it would not stay (the vacuum lines were removed from the "canister" hoping to prevent it from moving back to the low side).

The only way we got it to stay in the high side was to put the button in the high side and remove the "front" vacuum line from the canister. This allowed the remaining vacuum line to pull the fork into the high side and remain there. It seemed odd to me that with the button in the high side there was vacuum on both lines. Is this correct? What is going on?

Must be a 15,000 lb rear end, just get the electric parts off of a 17,000 axle, run wires, mount switch on gear shift, and go that way, couldn't get parts for my 74, C 60 15-20 yrs ago, just be careful and don't let the shifting fork drop out of line when changing linkage, or the rear end might need to be removed, that's what I was told.

Past agtalk thread on this topic. Tj farms mentions the vacuum switch might bad. I'd say it sounds like that might be right.
