Subject: Knive rolls corn head...Jd or Case IH

It it time for me to put on new knife rolls on my JD 893 cornhead and I was wondering which roll does a better job for notill.....John Deere knife roll or Case IH new knife roll. The JD roll worked great the first year or two but it basically only leaned them over last fall. JD knife roll would cost about 450 per row while the Case IH version sold by Clarke Machine is 525 but new knives per row would be 160 next time I need to switch. I don't want to start any color wars but want a honest opinion and which roll is better. I think the JD chops more but the Case IH pulls the plants down more and leaves the stalk all near the row. Thanks for any helpful input in advance.

I am now putting on a set of the Clarkes on my 693. Always liked the job Case IH has done. You may not be aware but you can flip them once and have new bottoms again. They look good and you are right that JD knife rolls really wear out fast, considering what they cost. Clark really helped us straighten out our new 925F head on a new 9550 and made it work, while JD was just telling us "no one else" had the problem. SO I thought I would give Clarke another chance. Seem like really decent people to work with.

The problem with JD knife rolls is that they are designed wrong. The knifes mesh and never open up to let the stalk in, that is why they wear out so fast and don't work after the edge wears off at the bottom of the roll. Look at picture 1 and 3 for examples of JD knife rolls.

Picture 2 is an example of a IH knife roll. The knives are opposing and while rotating the close and open allowing the stalk to be moved further up the head, thus utilizing much more of the knife area. And as already stated the knives are reversible and adjustable to your liking.

Our cornhead is a 853 IH that is 30+ years old and does a better job chopping stalks than the neighbors year old JD head.

Hope this helps

Header control problems. JD Service guys made many trips. Never got corrected, would push trash. I had to quit at nite and as I went home guys with old beatup 750 Masseys would still be going. Put Clarkes wedge in between head and throat and it has worked perfect for the past three years. When you are done with beans put the wedge on your corn head and it will lower the rear of the cornhead and make the stalk roll do a better job.

IMO the CIH stalk roll knives do a better job of chopping the stalks but then I haven't owned a JD cornhead since the late '70s. A couple other advantages to the CIH knives is that you can adjust the knive's clearance as they wear. Tley also can be switched from side to side to get more wear, they flip end to end when switched to the opposite side. We run about 1,500 ac of corn per year thru our 1083 & normally run 2-3 years after replacing knives, then flip then and get another year or two out of them. Downside is there are 8 knives per row, Shoup has them priced at $12.95 per knife which is about what we gave last year for CIH knives before sale price.

Somewhere in North central Iowa
You summed it up better than I could begin to! I have a 1063 CIH cornhead and the only drawback to the outstanding stalk cutting quality is that you have to have the right sprocket to match your travel speed. When you slow the travel speed down the cornhead still pulls the stalk through quite fast and sometimes this will result in grain loss when the ear hits the deck plates at a high rate of speed.

I reversed the knives on a 1063 IH head (worn at bottom end) and then would not feed at top end, so put new knives on and also put new chains and chalmer (sp) slow speed sprockets on which I had to cut the new chain and weld half links in. big draw back is to take a chain off now the front sprocket has to be taken off. when sprockets wear out going back ot IH 8 tooth. Old saying if it an't broke don't fix it.

I was interested in reading your comments about the Calmers slow down kits. I posted a question on here last year & didn't get an answer from anyone that had them. Several from people like myself that were interested .

As for the knife reversal, only thing I can say is we have changed 4 sets of them & haven't had the problems that you described. How close did you gap them? I was told to set them as close as possible without them hitting & that's what we try to do

My observation, the sprockets by themselves don't make a whole lot of difference, still have to get off a kick off the muskrat houses. This is on a JD 893 cornhead with JD knife rolls. Other heads, stalkroll combinations may be different. In our case the original spockets were shot, so it wasn't an expensive trial.

What about Pixall snapping rolls. Anybody ever had a set of them and if so.... pros and cons?
