This first tractor is a 1975 black stripe 1466 my grandad bought new right here in town. He traded a 1256 off to buy it. It got out of the family for many years but I was able purchase it back from the neighbors that owned it last fall. Took the cab off and did some fixing up then sent it off to be painted about the first of the year. Just got it back and have been putting the finishing touches on it.

This tractor is a black stripe 1976 1066 bought new buy a neighbor from the same dealer. He trade a farmall 450 and 15K boot for it. I purchased this winter as they were no longer using it. It has a fresh overhaul and I just got it home from getting a new clutch, t/a, injectors and injection pump. The serial number puts it 750 from being the last 1066. Going to do a little fixing and send it off to be painted. Going to leave the cab on this one.

I know some people don't like these tractors but growing up on the farm as a young boy I spent countess hours riding, then driving the 14 pictured above, a second 1466 we owned and a 1066 we had all at the same time. If I wasn't in a tractor I wasn't happy! Some things never change. To this day, nothing feels quite the same as sitting behind the wheel of a 66 series IH tractor.
So, it's safe to say I'm looking forward to some seat time in my new tractors.

Those are beautiful tractors, i bet that first one was a real work horse in it's day. We have a IH 1066 black strip, it's turned up to about 160 or so. It really blows a smoke cloud if your not careful. It ran a 12 row planter, sprayer, and gravity wagons for years. Now just a few wagons and touch up disc in the spring, think it has 5500 hours on it now. We have a 5 bottom plow for it i used once and man that was fun. All original paint, neighbor down the road a mile bought it new. Asks about it all the time, as do lot of locals. I think it is spoken for 2-3 times over by now but it's not going anywhere any time soon.

Okay I'll be the first to ask, is that a "green" hood ornament on your 1466?

Really like the black stripes....as 9670guy said...I thought the 1976 s were the black stripes, did you just paint it that way ? Great stories on those ...thanks. We had a '73 with the white cab that we painted like a black stripe in '78, but we got rid of it in the early eighties.

It's a very early true black stripe. They did build some black stripes that were 75 model years. Somewhere around here there is a picture where I am sitting on the weights of this tractor with my grandad standing there and my dad standing in front of the 1066. I remember the day that 14 came to the farm. Our first tractor with air conditioning. Who would have thought it could get any better?

This pic is from last fall.

Love it. Dad had a black stripe 1066 when I was a kid. That thing was a horse. I was positive it couldn't get any better with that tractor and dad's 400 bushel J&M wagon with those big floatation tires on it. My favorite past time was passing Deere's on the road in 4 high T/A and tossing the lever forward half way around. Some day I'd love to own one. I'd settle for running the gears on an open station one again on a warm summer day.

Awesome. I have a 76 black stripe late enough to have the 86 series seat on it from the factory. It was an extreme barn find 12 years ago. 1447 hours on it at that time. Rear original tires were dry rotted to the point of don't air them up. Two new rear tires, two new batteries with 17 year old fuel it fired instantly. Engine oil streamed from the front main instantly but loaded it up and brought her home. Took it to local CIH dealer to do front main seal and ran it 300 hrs. since on auger and mowing roads. Rear main seal has dripped bad but not completely out from years of sitting. You made my day posting the pic. I know what it will look like if I do the put off till next year restoration. Thanks again. I put a lot of hours on my dads 1466 as a kid. Just had to have one of my own.

Here's mine:

I bought this from the original owners as they retired from farming. It's a true black stripe and is lucky number 13 made for 1976. So far it's the lowest number true 1976 black stripe 766 known to exist (serial 16852). I found an original fender mount IH radio (working!) and added it. It now is in retirement and does parades and shows.

There were some built in 1975 but sold as 1976 models.  No different than now- the latest and greatest comes out in time for the fall farm shows.  There were I think a couple more things that changed during the run of late 66 series transitioning to the 86.  We have two original black stripe 1066s, SN 59175 and 61938.  The later one is only 110 tractors from the end of production.  I really should park them side by side and crawl around looking for anything different.

Here is my 766. My Dad bought it with 400 hours on it. It will never leave the farm. These days it makes it's living on the rock picker and the field roller.

Did you have any trouble finding fenders for a 66 since a lot have been used when cabs are taken off?

wahpeton, nd

I took delivery of a black stripe 1066 in late December of 75. It was first black stripe in for the dealer. I would call it a 76. The tractor was something a little different to hold people off until the 86s came a year later. I developed a hatred for that tractor, after about 300 hours I sold it and bought another Deere. That cab that came on that 1066 was intollerable.
