Anybody have a preference for spinner spreaders? Looking at throwing on DAP and AS around 300lb/acre at low speeds (2-5mph, depending on conditions). A local dealer is recommending a Kuhn- (I'm considering an MDS 935 with ~1800lb base capacity or maybe the AXIS 30.1 with ~2400lbs base cap), but the Bogballe spreaders have an interesting option for ton bagged fertilizer- a hydraulic arm that also mounts to the 3pt so you can easily load your bags with the same tractor. http://www.bogballe.com/gb/products/bm1250.html What's an effective max distance to throw DAP or AS? Specs on some of these spreaders say over 100ft!l Also, what're some efficient ways to field-load 1ton bags? It seems a waste to have a tractor there just to load bags when it could be out spreading, too, but I don't have a boom truck. That Bogballe arm looks like a sweet rig to save a tractor.

Tain, Scotland | Got a Kuhn 1999 model MDS1141 (Similar to axis 30), holds 2 tonne maximum I spread is 600lbs over 80 ft at 7 mph. Once calibrated it is dead accurate and the double overlap helps minimise misses. Do about 180 tonnes per annum through this machine every year. Only bother I have had is the top bearings on the gearbox when left over the winter corrode due to condensation and vanes on the discs can wear quite quickly and they are quite pricey but I will buy another Kuhn. Had an Amazone before which was a rusty heap.
Cheers BB

Thx BB, good info to know. Does that fellow have that Bogballe loader arm on his spreader? How do you load in the field, or are all your acres around the main barn area? Most of mine (plus my customers) are quite a ways away from the shop so transport and remote loading is required. I've heard everything from boom truck, extra tractor with loader dedicated to loading, and unhooking and using your own bucket to load. I don't have a boom truck, and I don't like either of the other options from an efficiency standpoint. Best one I've come up with so far is a second tractor with one of my existing smaller spreaders operating at the same time (fed with smaller hand-sized bags) and returning to the truck to load the big one whenever required. 3 men, two for tractors and one for the truck to return to the shop for more fertilizer. Smaller tractor with pallet forks and a bag hook to unload some fertilizer so the tractors don't sit waiting for fertilizer after they empty the truck. Either that or predrop fertilizer bags/pallets in the fields and hope that rain doesn't spoil it before it gets spread. Wet/chunky fertilizer can ruin a fellow's whole day.

50 miles west Stockholm , Sweden | Since -99 we got a Bogballe EXT 2800 and like it much! Now we are speaking of trade it to a new M3 plus 3300 lt , I want mostly a Bogballe but have eys on Amazone also . No big problems with the Bogballe spreader and allso spredchart on Bogballes web site! We use spreader for put N on winter wheat and canola in spring about 1200-1500ac a year! Go with Bogballe! my 2 cents

Tain, Scotland | Small bags very inefficient. 0.5 ton bags are Ok with these bag lifters but 1t bags put a lot of strain on them in Europe most people use 600kg (1320lbs) bags which are heavy enough with two in the box and one hanging 10ft behind the spreader. support legs are a must. The bogballe unit certainly looks strong enough. The ones around here dated from the mid late 90's and weren't up to the job often bending. Another method maybe to convert a bottom opening grain wagon with a hydralic driven auger and a long drawbar to pull behind the tractor under the fert spreader 6-10 tonnes of fert in the waggon long hoses driven from the spreader tractor. Just another option. You would need to keep it clean though as rust would take a hold or use a lot of Stainless steel. Cheers BB

| Not a lot of grain carts in my part of the world but having a dedicated trailer for fertilizer would certainly be handy. Now that I think of it, lots of loggers are going out of business around here so there's gotta be a few boom-equipped trailers available somewhere. Maybe something with a powerpack running the hydraulics to free up a truck or tractor... Gonna have to look into that one. | |||

Thanks Matts, I've got a couple of baby Bogballes (F221) and they've been good to me. Well, until the gearboxes went on them (not their fault). Wish I could find a way for people to figure out ahead of time if you use a PTO shaft that's too long for a smaller tractor that it'll destroy something when you lift the 3pt hitch. Grr.... You thinking of getting the boom arm for loading your new spreader? How do you load your present one?

50 miles west Stockholm , Sweden | Gin, we are not going to have the loading arm tho we use a littel wheel loder to fill it both out in field and at field close to farm. We have a sharp huge arrow (spitz ?)to lower the bigbags over and open up . Do not have to go from Wheel loader to open bigbags! Mayby a lb or so in bigbags left.

| Good idea, I'll look into some kind of arrow or self-opener. | |||
