Central Missouri | Does anyone have experience with this engine?
What are its downfalls?
How many miles before major repairs on average?
Considering a used mack truck with this engine and Mack 9 speed transmission.

SW Iowa | Over a year ago, I bought a 2000 Mack with an E-7 427 engine and a 10 speed transmission. It has almost 777,000 miles with a major OH @ 500 -600,000 mi. Still has a lot of miles left on my farm. Appears to be a good engine, maybe a little short on power when pulling 80,000 up hills, but I get there! |

Northern Illinois | Lots of versions of the E 7. Stay away from the early VMAC 1 ...no longer supported If you have a issue you have update to VMAC 2. ASET wasn't a shinning star either. If you are doing short hauls you will like the torque rise of the maxi cruise. The 427 and 454 good engines but have poor torque rise. We have some 380 maxi cruise with mack 12 spd. that trans was indestructible, and 14609B 9spd. nice trans but a pos as far life. Mack 4.17 and 4.64 respectively . Been good trucks. Also some CXU MP7 395 hp. with Allison autos. Have been excellent trucks except for the Mack DPF. Over all the E7 was a great engine except the EGR attempt on the ASET and cam follower issues and some expensive VGT turbo problems. |

Dennison, IL | We have two. One is a 93 with 350 horse. It has over 850,000/30,000hrs. And still going strong, not burning much if any oil and an 07' with 427 hp. It has 12500hrs./roughly 500,000 miles and runs great. They may blow up tomorrow, but they have been good engines for us. |

Virginia | We have a '96 E7 350 which was a fleet tractor. It had an inframe at 980,000. Mileage now is around 1,260,000. Engine starts good when cold, no oil leaks, pulls decent for a 350 IMO. Truck has a 9 speed Eaton. We've had the truck for 6 years and it has been one of the best investments I've ever made. Hour meter broke around 34,000 hours.

South Western Ontario, Canada | We have a 94 400 with a Eaton 10 behind her and is a good engine for what it is. Doesn't set the world on fire pulling our allowed weights up here but gets there and home.
The company we bought it from ran all Macks for years. The mechanic said the 400 was the best of the bunch. Runs over the 427.
Only complaint about it.... Ever since BRAND NEW it would loose fuel and drain the fuel filter! Sometimes while running and other times when parked. They replaces ever part they could and she still does it. Odd quirk. |

Texas/New Mexico Stateline | I drove one for my father-in-law for a while. It was a good engine. Did not use oil. It was 454hp and would pull right there with all the other trucks. I think it was a 98 or 99 model. It would start good when it was cold without a heater or ether. They are pretty simple as far as electronics and such. Just a handful of sensors, has a cross-bred electronic fuel injector pump. What I mean by that is it had the simple pencil type injectors with a conventional fuel injector pump on the side of the engine, controlled by a big servo. More or less like a lot of tractors, except the computer controlled the throttle.
Only problem we ever had with it was an injector line rubbed and wore through, and the timing sensor went out a couple times. Second time we realized we had installed it wrong. Plus the wires were a little bad going to it, so I soldered them and covered them good. That fixed the problem. |

| We have an 04 613 w E7 427 coupled to a Mack 13 spd. Only complaint on the engine is it's a little doggy starting out but once engine hits 1000 rpms or so it like a booster kicks in & it takes off. Doesn't use any oil and runs smooth.

NW VA | Love our '98 E7 460, not exactly sure on current mileage, but over 900,000 and 27,000 hrs. Been hauling silage with it since '06, never been opened yet that I know of. |

NC IL I80@68 | Got a '97 CH with E7-427 , 18sp and I think 3.85 or somewhere around there , all Mack . Just passed 800,000 and 31,000+ hrs . Know where it came from new it's had pretty good care down through the years . I did the pump and injectors couple yrs ago , engine has had nothing else done . Couple clutches , air compressor , radiator and charge air coller etc . Uses gal oil/10,000mi . VMACII I think . Is little slow on low end but has done pretty good gor me and my son, previous owner . He bought it at around 500,000 . He bought a 2000 Pete 378 500+ N14 18sp and all that then I got the CH . The 427 has nowhere near the low end torque the N14 has but can't expect it to . Later on he took a load of corn with the Mack when he got back I said what do you think , reply was except for taking the hill 10mph slower the Mack was a better ride . He probaply won't fess up to it now . Anyway I have driven them both , if you go for class etc the NAT approved and all that the 378 is a cool truck , dual air cleaners , stacks , lights and all that . But the Mack is way better riding , easier to get into and out of , seeing ahead , no air cleaner or exhaust to look around of , Mack has duals too but more behind cab . By the way the Mack spent most of its miles doing dump trailer, belt trailer and lowboy work . Still runs 30,000mi/yr construction/dump/farm work . Several have told me that this vintage was one of the best Mack engines built and is not uncommon to go 1mil mi before major work , don't know but will find out one of these days . Somewhere late 90's early 20's when they went to the unit pump , the style after this one, they had some camshaft problems , a lot of them were done on warranty probably some were not .I really can't say for sure , then the egr thing and some other issues , seems like you hear good and bad on the later models . I would like to find another one some day set up like mine but they are hard to find in good condition . |

Leesburg, Ohio | I like the Macks. Had two R models with 350's that were trouble free. Last one was an '03 CH613 with a 427 E7. Seemed to always use just a little coolant, but never could figure out where it went. Not enough to be an issue. Someone told us it could have been in the EGR valve, but never checked it out. More than adequate power. Only thing I did not like was the 10 speed it had. |
