Southwestern Ohio | I'm going to look at a cat 416b backhoe. 5000 hrs. std. hoe 2 wd. Are these any good? What to look for? Looks clean from pictures. Need a hoe for tiling. Thanks Tom |

| Those are nice backhoe's. I have a straight 426. The be series had several updates over mine. I would take a good hard look at the bushings and play on the pivot points. The good thing on the CAT units is all the pivots points have bushings so these can be replaced fairly easy if need be. The next thing I would look at is the hydraulic hoses. With that many hours there are most likely many that might need some attention. That can add up quickly depending on condition. Cylinder rams are also big, sometimes they get all scared up from abuse. Lastly get the hoe up to good operating temperature and make sure your torque converter and clutch packs are good. There are 2 clutch packs, 1 forward and 1 reverse. In 1st gear you should be able to go into a pile of dirt and spin both tires with the diff lock on. I just finished pretty much a complete restoration of mine back this summer. There were not too many bolts left un-turned. |

| WE have a 416B. Ours is 4wd, extenda-hoe & has 4n1 bucket. Personally, I wouldn't want to be without any of those options. Ours has about the same hours. Besides whats been mentioned check the bushings where the hyd pump mounts to the front of the engine, had to replace them a couple years ago. Also have had to replace the seal on the driveshaft where it comes out of the back of te TC. Recently had to replace the mechanical fuel pump on the right side of the engine block, now won't start (see thread below). My main complaint is the way the rear window folds up. I'm a little over 6' tall & when folded up & I hit a large bump it will drop enough to bang me on top of the head. :~(
FWIW, CAT used a lot of nonCAT components on these machines. If you follow the OM they take about 5 different brands of oil

waterford ohio | If it is 2wd make sure it has a 750# counter weight on it. Those things are scary to load on a truck . Mine was an e-stick though. |
