I have a pikrite vertical beater manure spreader that has been breaking the PTO at the tractor side CV. The PTO shaft has a CV joint on both sides of the shaft. Could that cause excess vibration? The spreader has a overload clutch that seems to be working fine.

Is it an over running clutch? On that shaft??
We had a batch of waltershid shafts that the dogs were installed incorrectly causing some similar issues. The double cv would not cause too much vibration, should be smoother.

The over running clutch is at the back of the spreader on a seperate shaft.

Dunno, perhaps the overrun clutch is over sized. Or try getting a larger CV joint on the tractor side, or larger shaft and joints on both sides.

Had something like that on a New Idea 5209 disc mower once. What it was -- the tubing was wore-- all was fine when we tried things in the shop but when under load the tubing would not slide in & out. Not saying that is your problem but something to check out.

I get rid of quite a few cv shafts on my equipment. A standard u joint will rattle a little but it's a good signal when I'm turning to sharp. Cv shafts don't seem to have the life of a standard u joint under heavy load. Replacing a u joint is a lot cheaper.

make sure your not bottoming the shaft out when you turn. did the drawbar get moved in at some point? thats what usually takes cv joints out.

I have noticed a difference in life expectancy when someone is running the drawbar at the wrong length. And if the drive shaft has been rebuilt a number of times, make certain that the yokes were synched properly.

(edit) I just saw bean farmer's post. I agree with him 100%.

That looks just like my old NH baler. Couldn't keep a double cv shaft on that thing for a year without it failing. I forget if it was a dealership or company guy that tried to tell me my 10k hour JD4450 was too much tractor... My response can't be quoted on here.

Like 1chevy02 said, go with a normal u-joint shaft big enough to handle the load and you'll have a lot less trouble.

I'm pretty sure cv shaft are put on implements so they can sell a $800 + shaft instead of a more reliable cheaper joint:-). Seriously I have seldom seen where you can turn sharp enough to need a cv and not tear up something else. Especially on something requiring a fair amount of power.

I agree with the other posters Gerard, Only CV on tractor side. If you put them on both sides, the shaft has a tendency to "hang" between the cv joints and not spin perfectly round if you understand what i mean. Also the CV on your picture seems very small for a manure spreader, how big is the spreader? Probably best to put a heavier, normal shaft on it.

I am wondering if the "double CV shaft" has one set or two. I really doubt there is any reason for having 2 on it. I would look at a redesign to a single CV joint at the tractor end and a single joint to the over-running clutch at the implement end.

The typical shaft I see these days has the drawbar pin much closer to the tractor end than to the implement end. That makes the angle a lot sharper on the joint next to the tractor when turning, so the CV needs to be there.

The old way of doing it was to make the shaft a short one with the drawbar pin in the center of the distance, so the whole shaft acted like a CV joint. Had one or two of those that worked really well until the support for the intermediate bearing got worn out and started to chatter. Then they got changed over to a single long shaft and we just quit turning sharp.
