Subject: J.D. 8320 vs 8330.

What are the "advantage" of going from a 20 to a 30 series? The 8320 I was looking at has intergrated plug and play, weighted front and rear, three point, 540/1000 pto, 80% tread all the way around, 2,210 hrs, (2004). HID lighting, buddy seat.... What do you gain with the 30 series? cab features? And a different hood? Does it shift smoother?
The 20 does not have IVT nor ILS. the 30 has ivt


There is 18,000.00 dollars price difference between the two, 4 years newer and roughly the same hours. Going to replace a 7810 MFD. Need a heavier, and slightly more horse power. These tractors should be a nice "used" upgrade. It will be pulling a J.D. 17770 nt 16 row, starter fertilizer, and esets. And in the fall it would yank around a sunflower 26 ft disk..

We think our 8320s have more pull than our our 8330. But the 8330 gets up to speed under a load faster. I prefer the 20s over the 30s. The ivt would be nice for planting though. I was told that ivt is worth 10k over powershift

Something to get use to, IVT you cant use the brakes to make it turn shorter. Looks like you have plenty of power to do the jobs you got for it. My planter is the same as yours and pull it with a 8300 and most of the time MFD is off.

I would probably take the 8320 given those options and those jobs. Planting ivt would be nice but not necessity. Fall tillage pst is fine. I really don't feel the 30's had any cab advantage. In fact our 30 has more dust in cab and sloppier steering column and door opens harder than the 20 with double the hrs. Really the biggest difference is 8.1 vs 9.0 engine. Both work well, 9 L has potential for EGR valve problems and variable vane turbo issues. Love driving the 8430 but I really like the 20's too.
Again with info given I'd take 8320.

Edit to add: check hyd flow on both. 20's came with 43 gpm being biggest factory pump option. 30's had 60 gpm factory option. Is your planter ccs? If it is you might consider the 30 over the 20 if the 30 has big pump. For a 16 row hopper planter a 43 gpm pump keeps up easily even with hyd drive.

We use brakes to help turn with our IVT, and it works just like any other tractor. Both brakes together will work as clutch.

With the 30, you get the joy of EGR cooler/valve, VGT turbo/actuator, variable drive cooling fan and all the problems and codes they provide. The 8320 will actually go to the field and stay there. That's just my experience, but it left a taste in my mouth and void in my wallet that hasn't allowed me to buy a new JD tractor since.

would get the 30 with ivt. Took awhile to get use to it but I would not want another power shift. Whent from an 84 to a 8530 and the fuel savings really surprised me on the planter.

Same here. The variable fan drive is good for a $3000 repair bill every couple of years. That's if you're lucky and it doesn't send the fan into the radiator.

I'm selling our 8330 right now because I need a little more horsepower. It has the ivt and we really like the tranny and the tractor overall. We have a 7720 and like that tractor also but has quad tranny. I guess I would go with the lowest houred tractor.

We have an 8320 and an 8330. The advantages of the 30 are smoother shifting and auto steer valve standard. The advantages of the 20 are more pulling capacity, simple hitch and throttle controls. If you use AMS equipment and the 8320 does not have the steer valve that will cost another 4 to 5k. The 8330 has more advanced display features that you access through a series of buttons while the 8320 is much more simpler display. We have replaced the EH valve on our 8320 and an exhaust manifold gasket. On the 8330 we have replaced the hydraulic pump twice along several electrical components. Bottom line: 8330 easier to drive but has had more issues. 8320 has a little more power and has been less trouble.
