IL | Something snapped inside the front case of my 8630 and one axle walked out of the housing while I was trying to limp it 1/4 mile to the shed. Other than the tires and wheels how difficult is it to get the housing out of the tractor or is able to be rebuilt in place? My guess is that the planetary snapped on the side that walked out, should I replace both while it's apart along with the ring and pinion or inspect to replace only crucial parts. Machine has 5400 hours with the original motor and a trans update to helical cut gears. Currently I only use it 120 hours a year but can't afford to replace/update to a newer machine. Plan to run it until the motor gives. This is going to sound nuts and I'm grasping at straws here. Is there a way to put it back together without the ring and pinion or driveshaft essentially making it a 2wd? I need the HP but traction isn't the issue.

se montana | more then likely just pull the drum stick out of side that walked out and get it fixed.. lucky you made it without breaking casting

Warburg, AB | If you do remove it, I'm interested in pictures of you remove the top cover. Curious if the whole diff could be flipped for an application requiring reverse rotation. Bruce

South Central Kansas | X2 you can just pull that side off and work on it no need to pull whole rear end. Is bolt broke off in the end of the axle?

IL | Bolt is still inside the housing threads in the axle and splines are ok (IMG_20131111_162821.jpg) (IMG_20131111_162842.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]()

Salvage yard complete front axle is your best fix. Many 8630 tractors apart at Sikeston. There is a serial no. change and a later assembley is better. 8640 will NOT interchange. After looking at picture I see a lack of gear lube on those parts. The whole front end is probobly toast. Normally the failure of 8430 and 8630 front axles is no oil.
Edited by KTA 11/12/2013 20:56

Pendleton Oregon | I'd just replace the parts what's needed. it doesn't look like a big deal

Newdale, Manitoba, Canada | According to jdparts, there are 3 serial number ranges: 000000-004324, 004325-007842, 007843-xxxxxx for the front diff, depending what part you're looking at. If the bolt simply unthreaded, it shouldn't be too bad. Maybe some bearings and seals while you're in there. Depending if you are looking at tackling this yourself or going to a dealer, I'd seriously look at pulling the opposite side apart while you're there. Andrew

IL | I was going to take it out and to a friend of my grandpas that is a retired JD mechanic to have him go through it. I'll tear that side apart and see what the damage is. It was making a knocking noise when turning to the lock at speed that the dealer said was a u-joint. I'd say that it was whatever came loose in the front end and not a u-join. I'm not real sure how the front end works or goes together and have never had one apart. I'm not a machinery mechanic but not completely clueless either. Probably ought to find a repair manual or exploded parts diagrams.

Geraldton,Western Australia | Find another complete diff..oil I run n them is 85/140, if not checked for ages it just gets churned up and disappears .. Unlike the 40 series it gets continuous pumped around from main hyd..

NW Ohio, near Findlay | You have a bunch of pieces in the bottom of the housing, will need to get them out, think will have to do more than just replace and stick together.

Central Ohio | Amazing finding this nearly 5 year old thread. This just happened to us a couple of weeks ago and while trying to figure out how to handle it I came across this thread. I guess we're not the first one that this has happened to. We managed to break the housing on the final drive when it happened to ours, and like yours, the threads in the axle shaft look fine. If anyone knows where there may be an undamaged complete front for one of these for a reasonable price I'd love to know about it!
