Owensville, MO | Finished one farm of beans today and was moving to another when alarm goes off while on the road. Look over and oil pressure gauge is at zero. Got it off the road and shut it down. Maybe 15 seconds after alarm. My first thought was sending unit so I pulled it off and made some calls to locate a new one. Thought maybe I should check to be sure that is the problem so I had brother watch the sending unit hole while I started the engine. Started the engine and no oil. That's not good. Decided to try one more thing so I pulled the pressure line off the turbo. Started engine and again no oil. Oil level is full so now I'm thinking oil pump shot crap on me. Dealer says he thinks it's probably the suction tube broke off.
So now I'm looking for ideas on what it might be, also on what needs to be done to fix it. Do I need to pull the motor? Sure looks like it if I need the pan off. Could a keyway have sheered on the pump drive or something? I've been in lots of IH motors but not a cummins. If you guys can somewhat walk me through a few things I can get it fixed. If the motor has to be pulled is there any tricks I need to know about or just tear into it??
Also it is setting on the side of a gravel road about 3.5 miles from the farm. Would sure like to get it back to the shop if it needs major surgery. Any good ideas on how to maybe tow it back home other than a $1000 wrecker bill??
Thanks guys

Huntley Montana | Pull the sleeves on the drive shafts, 2 chains With 2 pipes to keep it back from the tractor, or 2 tractors 1 front, 1 rear, & have someone steer it as you tow it home as once you pull the sleeves you have NO BRAKES. |

Grand Island, Nebraska | Oil pump is located behind front cover. |

| Probably the gears on the oil pump went bad. Just pull the front tin cover off and then 4 bolts and replace the pump. Hopefully the rest of the engine will be fine. |

Owensville, MO | How big of a job is it to get that front cover off? Dampner pulley has to come off right? Do I need to pull the radiator?

| Had that happen several years ago to a 1660 w Cummins engine. Going down the road the engine locked up, no warning, nothing. Oil pump had sheared it' drive shaft. Had to have a new short block put in it. Hope you have better luck. |

Remsen, Iowa | Did the same thing more than once. |

Buffalo IL | Had the same thing happen as boog. Sheared shaft and fixed it then overhauled it next year because missed some filings and they went thru motor. |

Washington, Kansas & Lincoln, Nebraska | For 3.5 miles, I'd just put the range transmission in neutral. Should still have some manual braking capabilities then. |

Central Ontario | Had to much 8.3 oil pump experience lately. The pump is above the centre line of the crank, the suck tube bolts to the block at the level of the oil pan.The pump is removable on a 2366 by taking off the fan ,pulleys ,balancer and then the gear cover.Had to remove engine to work on suck tube.Make sure you install the suck tube gasket the right way up, enough said.Had a challenge sealing up the gear cover,I would buy the recomended sealer. If I had the engine out I would get someone who should know to look at the bearings. |
