Subject: Massey Ferguson 390 as a loader tractor?

Alberta Canada
I am in the market for a smaller haying tractor to keep some hrs off my 6410 and 4440. I am wanting to rake and pick round bales with it. I found a 1996 Massey Ferguson 390 (70hp) with fwa with out a loader. My question is would this tractor stand up to some loader work? Just loading round bales (1000lbs-1600lbs) in the field, and possibly stacking in the yard. Anyone have a tractor this size with a loader? How do you like it or do you wish you looked for something bigger?

No I dont think its the 12-12 I think its just the standard. They are asking $13500, I think thats about 4k too much. How do you like the 390T for loader work? Is it alittle light or will it run beside an equivilant JD or CIH?

The 390 were good little tractors .I found one for a friend of mine and he has had no trouble at all .It has a cab and is a eight speed we put a loader on it and he moves hay and any other jobs that come along.

How does he like it for moving hay? Does he move the 6x5 bales?

its ok they used move a lot of silage round bales back home with them no real trouble at all
the clutches would wear out on them around 3000 hrs but what can you expect really for a small tractor anda lot of gear changes
the one i used to drive never hada loader on it was a 390t put 3000 hrs on it the first year that was our bigest tractor on the farm it got all real work it pulled a 4 furrow rollover plough no trouble didnt quiet have the weight for the plow so we had a platform on the front that a shuttle full of water would sit on that kept the front down
good simple plain tractors

if it has a left hand reverser on the coloumn its a 12x12

if it has a big lever on the right of the seat, the gear lever, that you push sideways for range change its a 18x6

some of the early ones were 12x4, with 3 levers on the floor or 8x8

they are a tried and tested utility,

keep the grease up to the front axle pivot, all loader tractors fail there adventually

if it leaks round the PTO seal, that is common, not a hard fix

if its a 18x6 they sometimes break the spring in the tranny for the range shift, half hour job if you double jointed , 8 hours the hard way

good tractors, will do what ya want well

perkins motor is ok, front axle is ZF ? ain't it

AS far as mowing hay its fine but this tractor is a (plain jane) and has a live pto and a dual clutch. And yes he does pick up 6x5 bales.
