Looking at a gmc 7500 dump truck curious as to what these engines are known for. TIA

The only one I would consider, is the 1994 engine, with "9CK" prefix on the engine serial number. It will have this style of ECM = see photo.

On here I have read a few reports of the 3176 and 3126 family of engines not being Cat's best line but I have a 3126 in a tandem and a 3176 in a cat 480 and have had no issues at all. I do know that the 3126 in the tandem is not the best for cold weather starting but if plugged in has always started even in -35 c weather.

What is the problem with other years? Does that only apply to the 3176 engine or to the whole family?

I had a 3176 in an International 9200. It was short on power but ran good with no probs. The early ones had head problems but Cat got the problem solved. I would compare it to the Cummins M-11.

3176 in machinery is a little different than the 3176 in trucks (with 100 mm tall Alum spacer under cylinder head, for weight savings)

There are improvements in that 1994 engine, but it still has some areas that weren't improved, until the C-10 / C-12 engines came out. (like cam gasket oil leak between front cover and Alum spacer deck

The 1994 engine uses a very common ECM, so it will be easier to get parts and sensors, verses the earlier engines (for the long run).
Heck, if you want a "personality module" for the earlier models, you have to call CAT and they have to make one (burn it) and then send it to the dealership =takes time. Now, the later model, with 40 pin ECM you can just "Flash" the current chip inside ECM; except really, really earlier 1994 models, then you just install a blank chip, and flash it with a CAT laptop, for the software that you need, or any updates

Now, if the price of the truck is really, really good and cheap; that would make a difference(on the decision) on an earlier model of 3176 in a truck, too.

We have 2 of them in early 90 model trucks. They run for us everyday in the fall but we don't put a lot of miles on them. We've had these trucks for over 10 years with no major issues whatsoever. If you're buying something to run everyday then I'd probably look at something else but for what we do they're fine.

It would be a 3126. Most likely 2XXHP range. Cat guy told me he could turn it up but it would melt the alum. pistons. It is not a powerhouse. More of schoolbus engine if you ask me. My Duramax's would run circles around with the same load. That said the truck it's in will outlast the pickup frame for heavy work. Only thing I have done is change an injector and set the valves in a 14 year old truck.

the 3126 has different arrangement numbers that allow for a little better power.most school buses have had a pdi tune if they arent in a smog check area so they can maintain 65 on the interstate

Have had 3 early nineties 3176 and had no mechanical problems with them. If you are going to be pulling 80,000 lb around all day long, you definetly need a bigger engine.

Depends where your pulling it. I have two 375 Pete with 3176's and on short runs to the elevator they are fine. When I haul corn to the E-Plant another 50-100 HP would come in handy. They still have more power than the 11.1 Detroit I have in a IH 9200 that has been demoted to sprayer tender truck now, and that was supposed to have 365 HP, but the 350 CAT's run all over it.

Hauling grain not a real long distance is a good job for that motor. Your only loaded 1 way. 3176 in a light day cab is a nice lightweight combo for max payload capacity.

I just traded in a 1995 Kenworth T600 yesterday from a guy on a 2388 combine I had for sale. It has the 3176 Cat in it but is a twin screw with a 20 ft. aluminum box on it. will that engine be ok in this set-up?
