Subject: Low oil pressure in N14 in 95 Freightliner

north dakota

the oil pressure in our semi is dropping very low when the engine is very warm on on a hot day. Had a gauge put on it today and it has 16 lbs at idle but when it was very hot out it would drop low enough to make the light come on and shut the engine down. I believe about 10 lbs. The odometer shows 911000 miles and we have no prior history on the truck. this is the third year we have owned it and we probably put 5k miles ayear on it. Also the oil pressure is ok if we idle at 1000rpm instead of 600. Any ideas of what to do or do we assume its getting tired

could be the oil pump.It could be tired to.Just dont think you can roll a set of bearings in this engine and life will be fine. The higher power ones would make the line bore bad enough it would lock the motor up as you rolled in the bearings

Somebody help me here. Mine did the same thing years ago, and it was one of those plastic things dropped into the oil pan. I'm not a an engine man, can't you tell.

I don't remember what "those plastic things" are called, but they spray oil up at the bottom of the piston. On the right side of the engine, each held in by one bolt. They're not too expensive, easy to check and change, and cause the symptoms described by the OP if one happens to be broken. Certainly a good place to start.

They're called piston cooling nozzles.

Piston coolers are like $5 a piece

1 or 2 have things mounted in front of them

cheap place to start

oil pressure relief valve in the oil cooler will some times get material stuck in it also

like flacks of camshaft

Sometimes the pin that drives the oil pump will break. The friction of the gear on the shaft is enough to pump up pressure while at idle, but when the engine starts to speed up, the gear slips on the shaft. I know we've had this happen twice on N-14's, and it's relatively easy to check. Not saying that is the problem, just my $.02.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

I thought the gear was a press fit on the shaft. My N14 acted the same way as the OP's. Replaced the oil pump and all was well. Took the old pump apart and everything looked OK with minimal wear but when I put the drive gear in the vise and jammed the gears so they couldn't turn, I could turn the pump assembly because the gear wasn't tight on the shaft.
I think it's a fairly common problem on the N14s.

Agree with Ed, pull the pump, they are pressed on, cheap insurance, if it fails, it gets spendy, sure would not hurt to pull pan and inspect brgs with that many miles if copper is showing on brgs they need replacement. Will you have pan off look up and inspect cam lobes, N-14's have has issues with flacking cams, also cut oil filter apart, Scott.

usually if you have a broke piston cooler you will end up with worse issues in the future.I havent seen many that were broke unless the engine has had the pan off getting work done to it

Ours had a pin. Both of the trucks were from the same fleet. Maybe somebody along the line somewhere drilled and pinned them for insurance! They are still running today, haha!
