Iowa | Has anyone ever built their own alleyway that leads into a chute? I read somewhere Garvo saying he wouldn't use guardrail for an alleyway. Don't remember why but I'll take his word for it. Or is it best and maybe just as cost effective to buy one from someone that makes them for a living? I like the ones Linn Post makes here are a few pics I got from their site. I talked to the guys from Linn at Dakotafest and seems like they were either $2400 or 3400. I know metal is expensive but it is just a lot of money for what it is. I'm an old cheapskate! On another related topic my son is looking to build a new working facility and sent me these pics/plans thought I would share here and get some feedback. The building is a 30x54x10 and would probably enclose 1 of the longer sides-maybe both. Hope all can interpret the pics and plans. Let me know what you think

We have 3 different working facilities, all home made, I like guard rail in the holding and catch pens, but not in the runway. one we built with guardrail but ended up lining it with lumber. The guardrail made it to easy for the cattle to flip around. I got one that isn't very old but the lumber rotted away on the ends, will replace with bridge planks or at least thicker sawmill lumber. I also should have staggered the lumber so the seems are not all on the same spot. The metal runways look nice, but $1000 buys a lot of railroad ties and planks. Are you along hwy 3?

Iowa | No im not along hwy 3. Thing about the wood runways is you cant adjust the width. Will be running all sorts of sizes through.

Here's one we built at my Dad's. Holding pens aren't completely finished yet. Setup works good, and it could be made adjustable easy enough.

yep, if you run lighter cattle it would be handy to have it adjustable

Texas/New Mexico Stateline | Crude, nothing fancy but it works. Just drill pipe and new 10 ga. (or 14??) sheet metal. This is mainly for calves going to wheat. The alley is not adjustable, and would be too tight for cows. But I wanted it tight enough they can't turn back.

Iowa | That's neat! Thanks for pics/ideas

Eastern Kansas | I've got a rusted out 24' hale stock trailer I've been planning on cutting in two and using for each side of an adjustable alley at my place. Maybe I'll get around to it in the next couple years. This is what we built at Dads last year to replace his old oil field pipe rusted out corral: (0506174401.jpg) (0506174411.jpg) (0506174429.jpg) (0506174444.jpg) (0506174636.jpg) (0506184149.jpg) (0506184207.jpg) (0506184252.jpg) (0506184302.jpg) (0506184317.jpg) (0506184331.jpg) (0506184336.jpg) (0506184348.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 0506174401.jpg (62KB - 835 downloads) 0506174411.jpg (90KB - 730 downloads) 0506174429.jpg (96KB - 676 downloads) 0506174444.jpg (47KB - 740 downloads) 0506174636.jpg (95KB - 633 downloads) 0506184149.jpg (47KB - 642 downloads) 0506184207.jpg (35KB - 704 downloads) 0506184252.jpg (77KB - 655 downloads) 0506184302.jpg (88KB - 658 downloads) 0506184317.jpg (71KB - 765 downloads) 0506184331.jpg (62KB - 690 downloads) 0506184336.jpg (73KB - 684 downloads) 0506184348.jpg (68KB - 727 downloads)

NEMO | I had a chance to see that set-up in person a few months ago. Nice, affordable, simple and practical. Enjoyed visiting with your folks also!

Iowa | GCAT Looks really good and functional. I like that bull whats his history? I would consider myself a pretty handy person around the farm, except when it comes to welding... no one in my family have ever welded worth a damn! Would take me a year to build your set up, but I like it

east central nebraska | Rick, have you ever used a bud box set up like the one in your drawing ? The reason I ask is I'm also preparing to build some different working facilities and am trying to learn from everyone else. Most bud boxes that I've seen, load or fill from an alley that leads straight into box, haven't seen any that load perpendicular to box, as in your drawing, just wondered if cattle flowed well in your design. Trying to learn. Thanks. Edited by runningtowin 9/11/2013 23:10

west central Iowa | My runway is only 16 ft long. One side is just wood posts and 2x12s. The othe side is a gate made from 4 2x12s. The gate is just chained to three posts. These posts have have 4x6s hinged to them that flip around between the post and the gat to narrow the runway for calves. Didn't take much to put together and has worked well for 15 years for my small operation.

Yes I did and when it was all said and done I really didn't save anything. I spent alot of time on that.

Well, thank you, and thanks for the hauling. Yeah, if you had seen what was there before, you would know it is a whole lot better, like light years. Of course, what was there before was nice in 1979. d;0)

Iowa | I have put in 2 bud boxes in last two months or so. I really like them, but they do run straight into the box from an alley. But I do have a neighbor that has a load out similar to the drawing above and it works slick. I have one bud box I put together pretty cheaply in a pasture. It isn't fully enclosed (you can see through it) in my opinion it doesn't work as good as the other box I built that is fully enclosed and they cant see out.
