Subject: Knipco F-98 torpedo heater won't start!

Hi, I would appreciate any help you guys might give me. I own the above heater, bought used last year, used it the the whole winter, had starting problems, but was able to deal with. This winter, it fired a couple of times, but after that nothing... Lots of what it looks like smoke (might be just the fuel spraying...) but no firing. Took it apart, checked the igniters gap (not sure what the gap should be, don't have a manual, don't even see an arc anymore) I measured 350 volts at the transformer, and 330 at the igniters, don't know if this voltage is high enough to spark an arc between the two igniters. Any ideas?
Thanks
Aldo

I'm not farmilar with that brand, but any oil fired ignition system, is going to put out aleast 6000 volts, with most modern systems at 10 to 12000 volts. I f you check voltage at the ignitor with a multi meter, you now need a new meter. There are meters to check them, but not to many people have them. To check an ignition transformer, take a good insulated screwdriver and touch output term of trans to case ground and slowly pull oneside away to see an arc. you should be able to get atleast 3/4 to 1" of arc to ground.

Thanks Tim, I'll try that! I did notice that most of these heaters don't have the two terminal transformer I have, but the one terminal, leading to "spark plug" type igniter.
My transformer has provision for two spark plug wires, each one leading to an igniter placed on etheir side of the fuel injector.

I believe that one is the positive lead and the other is the negative or ground side. Unless they are both positive leads (but why would I be able to measure 330 volts current across them... ) and in this case both need to be directed to ground. Thanks for listening...

I was having trouble with my Reddy Heater 100,000 btu heater not wanting to run. It turned out to be some little electric eye in there that can see the fuel shooting it there or something. It was a long time ago that it happened. There was a repair parts wharehouse in Valparisio Indiana I think. They can send you the parts very quickly. I think I looked up Reddy Heater on the internet and that is how I found the parts distributer. I would be lost without my heater. I use it a lot! In fact I am going to go out and use it tonight! Good luck.
