It is my understanding that the oil cooler on an ISX has a thermostat in it. At what temperature should that thermostat open up? Last week when it was 95 degrees the oil overheated in my truck. I never really paid attention to it closely before that but don't seem to recall it ever being abnormal when glancing over the gauges. The coolant was running 200-210 at that time. Since then I have blown out all the coolers and radiator and other than during accelerating it drops back to 185-190 with ambient temps in the mid 80s, but the oil temp will climb up to 235-240 and stay there while loaded loaded and drop back to 225 when coming back empty.

At 250 the engine de-rates, and running a headwind at 103k is no fun.

Could it be a bad sensor? Check the temp of cooler with temp gun.

We're thinking the sensor might be ok. Beings the oil cooler is in the housing that the oil filter screws to on the side of the block, would external temp even be representative of internal temp? I see on some of the newer engines they have a dual cooler setup. This thing is going shed the EGR as soon as winter gets here.

Is the exhaust temp 1000+ with the oil temp at 240? Are there any leaks in the air to air?

Mine runs about the same temp as yours. I've had it to the shop and looked at and put new thermostat in and still same thing. Mine is a 2003 --9400i. My brother bought a 2006 --9900i and his doesn't ever get over 180. If you figure it out let me know

You could take it to a dealer and check max temps with laptop ,Should not cost but 100$

Is your EGR valve still hooked up? I have heard unplugging them will get them to run cooler.

According to Cummins, derate occurs at 252 degrees. In testing the thermostat, they want it fully open at 260 degrees.

Now doesn't that make sense....de-rate at a lower temp than that which is supposed to have stat fully open?

The EGR is still hooked up. This winter it is going to get the treatment from Full Tilt to remove it and a little more HP. How long are the injectors good for typically in an ISX? Truck has 675,000 miles, but 19,xxx hours on the clock. Our 3406E got new injectors at 640k and sure woke it up.

I thought that a little odd myself, but I suspect that the t-stat is open long before 260. Keep in mind also that you WANT the oil temp at around 220-230 or so to boil out any moisture that may accumulate.

Can't comment on injector life, as I don't work on those engines for a living. It's safe to say that fuel cleanliness will have a major impact on the life of the injectors.
