Subject: John Deere 14T Baler

I recently saw a 14T headed down the road. It looked to be in good shape and headed home from the field. It made me think, what kind of tools and technology were used to develop this innovative machine in the 50's? How long did it take to develop? How many are still in use almost 60 years later? Quite an accomplishment for Deere.

still use the one my dad bought new in 1955 for $1500. baled 100k's of bales for ourselves and custom. almost never miss ties and if it does it is usually not the baler's fault.

Not a 14T, but we still use a 24T. Still works well and had a lot of hay through it when we got it 30 years ago. Mostly switched to round bales now, but still do 1500-2000 squares/year.

small town Iowa....
I never thought about the balers but, I always wondered what the people at Waterloo Tractor
plant went through when they abandoned the 2 bangers and introduced the 10 series Deere tractors.
This had to be the biggest change ever in the industry. This moved Deere from a wanna-be to the #1 player.

+1 on the 24t. It's never been off the farm, bought before I came along and I'm a 1972 model!

There was an article on Deere balers development in Green Magazine a couple of years ago. It mentioned that at one time there was something ridiculous like 90 rail cars loaded with 14t balers waiting to be delivered from the factory.

There's a 14T in the farm that still gets used. Doesn't do many bales anymore, but still makes good tight bales. I've been behind a number of different balers and mostly newer, I still think the old 14T makes some of the best bales. May be the way I have it set, but they are tight and hold their shape, makes it easy for stacking.

The knotters go back to grain binder days. When McCormick and Deering merged to become McCormick Deering, they each had a patented knotter. They used McCormick's knotter in the McCormick Deering and sold the rights to the Deering knotter to anyone who wanted it. When balers were developed, they used the same knotter. McCormick's was used in IH balers and everyone else used the Deering. When Case took over IH, I don't know which knotter survived. but to my knowledge, even today there are only 2 knotters out there.

Still have and use both 14T and 24T on the farm. We have the 14 in backup mode now but have baled a lot with both and have never missed a bale that was the balers fault. Keep them inside and are still in great shape.

You guys must have better luck timing those old balers than I did. On the 14T, I found that perfect time was usually half-way between 2 chain links on the chain driven knotters. Then there was the time that same chain stretched a little, just enough to cause the safety stop to not engage, and I re-configured a set of needles with the plunger at full RPM.

It was a really good day when the 336 with gear driven knotters showed up. I will completely agree that the 14T when it was working made better bales than the red & yellow or red & white ones.

We drug one out of the barn last week to keep a landlord happy so she could feed her horsey. If you keep it out of the weather, it just goes right back to baling when needed.
