looking at adding power roll tarps to my trailers. Who makes the best ones?

Shurco www.shurco.com
roll rite www.thunderstonemfg.com www.riesenbergenterprises.com
lock down from Sioux city tarp http://www.siouxcitytarp.com/

I chose these three because they are near me in NW Iowa.

TIA

"farmerbob". We have 3 Shurco tarps, two of which are electric & until just recently I would have recommended Shurco. In April we purchased a new Timpte trailer with a factory installed Shurco 4500 electric tarp. After hauling about 40 loads with the trailer the tarp quit working properly. After a couple seconds the motor would stop. Wait a couple seconds & it would work again. I checked the breaker & it was OK. We replaced the solenoid behind the cover on the front of the trailer with a spare we had & still the same problem. Son then took the bolt out that connects the motor to the tarp but it would still kick out, then wouldn't work at all though there was electric to the solenoid.

I called Shurco and the gal told me a few things to check, which I had already done.. She then asked how old the tarp was & who installed it. I told her when we bought the trailer & that Timpte had installed it. She got kind of rude & told me that it could not be a Shurco tarp because they had quit selling to Timpte over a year ago. I tried explaining to her that we had other Shurco tarps & it was most definetley their tarp system. She then rudely told me it wasn't their tarp & I needed to call Timpte.

I hung up and called the Timpte dealer we bought the trailer from & explained what the gal from Shurco said. He then called Shureco and got the same person & she told him as well that it wasn't their tarp. He finally called Timpte & got the PO # from when they purchased the tarp from Shurco. He tried calling Shurco but hasn't got an answer back from them. So here we set with a 4 month old electric Shurco tarp that the motor is bad on, which they say isn't theirs though it has there name on the cover & their parts# and their transmitter. Meanwhile we're having to hand crank the tarp which with the opener motor & attachments is much harder to do than if it was just a regular roll tarp. Dealer says he will help us out but we have 30,000 bu of corn to deliver this month plus trying to harvest wheat between rains.

Up until this point I would have recommended Shurco without any reservations but after this experience & their flippant attitude no way would I recommend them. First time I've ever had anyone tell me that I don't know what brand of merchandise I have , especially when I'm looking at their name on all the different covers.

I installed a shurco on my Wilson. The directions are vague so I called them for clarity. I got the same women. Very rude, no help at all and knew everything. Mine is working well but it will be my last from them.

Got one installed at Bismarck Canvas, uses a parallel arm system kinda like a planter unit parallel arms......allows it to climb over piles, seems like it will be very strong with the 2x3 sq. tubing on the main arm vrs. round thin wall tubing.

We have a Thunderstone. Works great. Their customer service for questions on installment were excellent!! Almost every load my daughter hauled of wheat, she said "Thunder Tarp!" on the two-way. She is impressed!

Timpte recommends the Thunder system. I have little experience with electrics, having just had this trailer for about two months. But I'm impressed with the one touch Thunder tarp system and the electro-hydraulic traps. Pit operators at the elevator sure like the Thunder traps too. With my limited experience, I'll certainly echo the recommendations for the Thunder system!

I have shurco on my trailer, the other one we use has the thunder system. I'll take the thunder tarp seven days a week and twice on Sundays. The other guys don't even want to use my trailer because of the tarp and the fact the other trailer has timpte's hydraulic door openers so the don't have to stand in the dust.

A hopper walker and hydraulic grain trailer doors are two of the best purchases we have made on the farm. Makes for happy help during our July to November harvest season.

I would stay away from Roll-Rite from our experience. The motors seem week and I don't like the controls. We have had good luck with Shurco, but always deal with a farmer dealer, not the company, except for the time I burnt out a trap motor because the switch stuck. They covered it under warranty even though it was my fault.

Not sure how the other brands are but one thing I did with our shurco was rewire it to a more standard 2 prong auxillary plug. Sometimes called a tailgate control plug. The Shurco uses two vertical pins where the more common plug uses two horizontal ones. This allowed me to just get plugs locally when adding the kit to other trucks and allowed me to get a coiled cord for the truck that only runs it once and awhile and to get a 4 in 1 AirPowerline to keep everything neat on the meain truck.
